I've got a Canon T6s (lightweight, crop sensor) & use mostly wide angle lenses. My first impression is that the Gorillapod will give me near ground level perspective & more while the Platypod seems less versatile. Any & all thoughts appreciated.
Platypod is a great tool, so is the Gorilla Pod. The Platypod can be used in locations where Tripods are forbidden, like in museums. Security do not recognize it as a camera support. The Gorilla Pod is useful for wrapping around objects, or carrying around when vlogging.
They're different tools. It really depends what you want to do.
I have both, go for the gorillapod

If you do, a hot shoe mounted spirit level might come in handy. Saying that, there might be a gorillapod which has one.

I have the Ultra Pod and love it, small enough to fit in your back pocket

Ultra low tech, cheap and very effective is a homemade beanbag. Use coarse cloth such as canvas and get small plastic pellets on the internet which are inert, lightweight and moisture proof. Size it to the baseplate of your camera 3-4" or so and it will fit in a pocket and go anywhere without restrictions. It is every bit as effective on horizontal or vertical surfaces. Pat

There's no perfect solution to all problems, but I have and recommend the gorillapod focus with ballhead. Gorillapod 5K is the updated model.
