When I see a thread/post with spelling errors I automatically discount anything the individual says. Sort of like Nigerian SPAM e-mails I receive with obvious spelling errors and terrible grammar!

In English, spelling as well as meaning changes with location. It is one of a few 'living languages' able to create new words rather than add a 'foreign' word instead.

In the UK both spelling and legible handwriting became less important in school education as the looney left took over the Education System. Another 'inovation' was 'the supply teacher' that filled in occasionally. This often meant that homework was never marked as tutors changed almost weekly.

Junior School &University is probably the only places where spelling mistakes lower's grades.

Then there is the 'Spell checker'.........it has made most people lazy.

If you want to understand how badly english can be treated read UK Government letters and reports! They have the cheek to add a footnote telling us that "this is available in other languages and formats".....Plain English would be a better start!

Yes there are probably mistakes in this.....I do not write a great deal anymore. I cannot find the flaming spell checker on UHH.

The "smell"* checker is just below the mid point between your eyes.

*spelling does count, and so do typing (keyboarding to some) skills

I would have to ask him to make sure but since Team Rubicon is a volunteer disaster response team made up of mostly veterans and they do everything from floods to brush fires it is a variety. Because of the fires and wet lands work they do in California it is probably heavy on the dozers, skip loaders and back hoes.
He and our daughter got deployed to Houston after Harvey. She got to help cleanup and get a retirement home back in business. But he went in right on the tail end of the storm and being a former combat engineer he got teamed with a Corps of Engineer's Colonel to survey, map and plan for the relief crews who followed. He was a bit upset, he had wanted to actually do things and operate stuff. Sort of like his tour in Iraq, he complained that the senior NCOs and Officers hogged most of the fun jobs. I read that as blowing stuff up.

There is a sort of spell checker on UHH. Type in a word obviously wrong and you get a red wavy line under it. This line doesn't show in the final copy posted. For example UHH, not being a "real" word, has a red wavy line under it. And if you forget to put a space between words it will usually pick that up too. Note that it is an American spell check not the rest of the world :-)

The above only works for those people who have, at one time or another, been taught to read properly.

I believe the spell checker is in your browser, not at UHH.
Firefox uses a file called persdict.dat stored in the user's appdata directory. This is in addition to its standard dictionary. You can add words to your personal dictionary by right mouse clicking on the misspelled word. Firefox puts wavy red lines under misspelled words.
Maybe Chrome has a dictionary also.

That depends on how you define "matters." Can you still get the meaning from a line of misspelled words? Yes, you can. How would Cambridge react to an applicant who wrote sentences full of misspellings?

It's true that when we read a piece of text we are so familiar with the words that we can understand what's written if the first and last letters are correct. However, that definitely does not mean that correct spelling doesn't matter. I'm a writer and sloppy spelling drives me nuts!

My spell checker works in UHH and I use it all the time. And it's lens not lense, and "I need advice" not advise.
