Need some help... lost files.

My computers have a C drive for OS and programs and a D drive for all data.
Do you have TWO hard drives, or do you have ONE hard drive divided into two PARTITIONS? If you don't know the answer you need to find out. Partitioning a hard drive gives you NO protection from hard drive failure or corruption of the system..
Try doing a search using. ??* which should lookfor files with a ? at the start if I remember my old search patterns correctly. Correct me if I am wrong

This morning I came down and opened my computer and to my horror I found that all my files, documents, and photos in my "Download", "Documents", and "Photos" files were completely gone. No programs were bothered nor anything on my external hard drives, thumb drives, or SD cards that I was working with. An extensive search and use of recovery programs indicates that they are completely gone.. as though I never had anything there in the first place. I guess the only help you can offer is the July and August editions of the Challenge Calendar. Thanks

The only time I’ve seen files disappear like that was when a (computer illiterate) friend let windows automatically upgrade to the first version of Windows 10 and didn’t follow the instructions properly. She wasn’t backed up and it wiped all her document. Luckily she was a paper lover and had hard copies of the few documents she really needed.
Otherwise they are there someplace.
I didn't do anything like that either. However, I went into Microsoft Word the other day and just for grins checke for past documents and found a whole list of thins I have save from past years so it appears I still have my documents, just lost all my photos that were in the download, document, or photo files. Strange.
You might try a file restorer program, such as Panda Recovery. Could find and restore accidentally deleted folders.
I would add a few new photos or down load them to see if you can see them. If you had a software update, it is possible the the files are there but not recognized. If you copy a couple of jpeg's and they also fail to show, you would have a key to what is going on. However, if you add them and they work fine, it gets even more confusing!
I believe the Microsoft Windows 10 upgrade includes a reversal option, taking the computer back to the previous operating system. This reversal might restore your invisible files.
That sucks Harry! Here in Canada our Best Buy has a Geek Squad. They are awesome. Not sure if they have same. But if so worth a try. Good luck. John
There are many rescue disks available on line. Personally, I would download a copy of linux, burn it to a DVD and boot from the DVD. This will NOT change anything on your computer. Linux can read all Windows files and show all disks, partitions, folders etc. If it can't find your files they ain't there.

Yes.. My son is some kid of computer jock and he could find no (zero) indication that they were ever there or anywhere on my computer. I think I had a Windows update during the night... who knows what that did to me
The files DID NOT delete themselves, nor did a Windows update. You either have a virus due to lack of proper anti virus protection, or a HUMAN deleted or moved the files and is not owning up to what they did.

Lots of good suggestions here. While possible, I doubt just the photos are gone. As has been suggested, make sure of your login. When you boot, does the machine have a choice of user logins? Or if you select turn off/shutdown and switch user, are there multiple users? If so, login as the alternate user and try again. If that’s not productive, I’d download a copy of SearchEverything and search for .jpgs (or whatever raw file extension you use). Next, i’d make sure I had an appropriate viewer for whatever file type your photos are. Next, if you have recover points enabled, revert to the last known good point. Finally, if all else fails, i’d take the suggestion of installing Linux and searching again. If all this fails, you do have your important data backed up somewhere, right?
Good luck and let us know the results of your search.

You may have heard this suggestion already but here are two thoughts:
Have a computer guru:
1. check the computer's registry for anything suspicious.
2. check for any update(s) or hacking that was occurring while the computer was on all night.
Scanned with Recuva\recuva64.exe found nothing
