UHH people are addicted to the act of Opining... offering opinions....My simple blunt statement is that you should go to "search" at the top of the page and then spend many hours reading the info of the hundreds of comments.

Simple comment... buy filters with plastic bodies... they are easily expendable. Metal, often Aluminum, is soft enough it galls... distorted it grabs. Paraffin wax is good lubricant with very low vapor pressure so does not transfer to lens parts. **Galling is a form of wear caused by adhesion between sliding surfaces. When a material galls, ... Galling is most commonly found in metal surfaces that are in sliding contact with each other. It is especially common where there is inadequate lubrication.

johneccles suggestion is a good one... [pg 1 at bottom] sort of a spanner wrench.
many examples of spannes: https://www.mscdirect.com/browse/tnpla/87002697?cid=ppc-google-New+-+Bestseller+-+PLA_s___278772275744_c_S&mkwid=s|dc&pcrid=278772275744&rd=k&product_id=87002697&gclid=CjwKCAjw7cDaBRBtEiwAsxprXU8XQsOcC5zjBH91LzC4KKM8hCeCniIsNCU34uMQfTW0nNIvicOXyBoCWt4QAvD_BwE

Good luck.

I am sure this is not the first time it has happened to anyone so perhaps someone has a trick to loosen a filter. I try to be careful and not over tighten a filter as I mount it but somehow it has gotten 'stuck'. It is a metal Hoya on a plastic barrel, does anyone know of a trick to loosen the filter with out torqueing the filter/lens barrel so hard that the lens are moved knocked out of proper focus alignment?

No, you're not the first. When I screw filters onto lenses, I make sure they're not very tight. Actually, I seldom screw a filter onto a lens. I use Xume magnet adapters - fantastic.

I'm not a big fan of filter wrenches. I've tested them, and they never worked for me.

Some other ideas -
Place upside down on rubber jar lid opener.
Don’t grip top of filter too tight. That can spread thread area.
Put in freezer for about six minutes.

I guess everyone has had this problem. I've looked at wrenches etc. many times but in the end I find the same as sippyjug - relax, don't squeeze too hard and keep trying. I've always found that after several attempts, the filer suddenly comes off easily which leads me to agree with some comments that slight distortions we cause when we squeeze the filer are what causes them to jam.

Filter Wrench works great or get an experienced photographer friend to remove it! Like I did. It happened to be a circle polarized filter.

Take a look here. There are many inexpensive jar openers that will do the trick.

I have used a figure 8 rubber jar opener from WalMart. Costs $8 and works every time.

You need a filter wrench. They are available for most mm filter sizes. The following is a example.

A friend used one of the sink wrenches for getting the part that's attached to the bottom of the sink on his . Worked great.

I use a zip tie around the filter. Pull it tight and it applies equal pressure to the filter...removes easily.

If it is only a bit stuck, try tapping the edge of the filter with a flick of your finger, hitting it with the fingernail. Often that is all you need.

Sometimes a second filter, combined they provide better grip to unscrew. It's hard to avoid gripping with pressure which distorts the filter binding it tighter a light grip on the filter can make it easier to unscrew than a tight grip which distorts the filter, kind of like a drum brake in a car. Putting it to one side for a while and coming back to it when you feel relaxed also helps. if you have a screw in lens hood with a ring you can screw that on screw the ring against the filter and then unscrew the hood with the filter attached.
