I guess Iโ€™d rather have someone say that my camera takes good photos rather than bad ones.

Answer kindly and simply. The question may as well be, โ€œHow do you fly a fighter jet?โ€

Sitting here reading the posts I just had a idea.
Guns don't kill, camera don't take pictures. Humans do. They are both tools and in the hands of the proper people they both do the job.

I say yes

I'm sure we've all heard this a few times at least...and I'm wondering about the verious ways we respond to those well-meaning comments. Often our 'inner voice' is saying, "Hey, I took that photo, I selected the lighting, composition, timing, exposure, etc...the camera was just the tool I used...!" Our better angels usually come to the rescue with some version of, "Thank you, very much", but I'd like to hear the reactions or responses from others.

Who hasn't heard the snappy come-back that goes something like..."Shakespeare wrote some great plays, he must have had a very good typewriter..!"

I tell people that I go to pretty places and look for things that I like.

I say: "The schmuck behind the camera isn't too bad, either."

I usually just smile and say โ€œYes, it is!โ€ and take it as a compliment, but there was an instance when a mother (part of a musical family that frequently performed at events I photographed for a local non-profit) asked me to take her daughterโ€™s senior pictures because she liked the clarity of my camera. She also wanted the original files to use the photos to promote her daughter (who is an award winning violinist and fiddle player, now a musician in Nashville), so I quoted her a price including copyright release. She said โ€œThey are only photographs!!โ€ At that point I told her that anyone can make a sound with an instrument, but it takes a musician to make music and that education and practice are even more important than the instrument. She agreed to my price.

Because she thought my camera took such good pictures, someone once asked me what brand it was. She wanted to get the same one for her husband. I often wondered if it took good pictures for him.

I like the saying that if you are a great chef then you must have a great stove. Mine makes great hot water.

I am not insulted. I realize it is someone who knows less about photography than I do. Besides, if a good photograph is all my doing, why did I buy expensive gear?

Amen! I let the photos do the talking. With a bit of thought most understand how it was captured. My ego is not so fragile that it has to be constantly propped up.

I usually agree and say something to the effect of "It really does" but then I smile internally because I know the truth.
