Don't EVER put yourself down! People won't respect your work if you don't have confidence in yourself.
I tell them, "Yeah and I didn't have to do a DAMN thing."
Of course that I have heard that a few times. When I am asked what camera did I use I point with a finger to my eyes and my head.

I'm sure we've all heard this a few times at least...and I'm wondering about the verious ways we respond to those well-meaning comments. Often our 'inner voice' is saying, "Hey, I took that photo, I selected the lighting, composition, timing, exposure, etc...the camera was just the tool I used...!" Our better angels usually come to the rescue with some version of, "Thank you, very much", but I'd like to hear the reactions or responses from others.
Who hasn't heard the snappy come-back that goes something like..."Shakespeare wrote some great plays, he must have had a very good typewriter..!"

Had a friend do it on Facebook, my response was "Excuse me?"
I smile and say thanks.
No sense sitting down next to them pic to pic and pointing out where I feel there should have been post processing work or better exposure. Or perhaps waiting a sconce longer on that sunset. What good comes of that? When I attend a summer art festival and see a photographer displaying his or her works for sale, I can almost "hear" the thoughts of the onlookers "I could do that with my instamatic"..."I just don't have the time."
Well, no you couldn't. That artist knows his camera. he or she knows their post processing techniques and they also know printing. they know a lot that you don't..but why bother off putting others.
As I said, I smile and say "thanks'

Thank you, yes my camera is almost as talented as me.

“Shakespeare wrote some great plays, he must have had a very good typewriter..!" I have had just the opposite happen. The families tell me what great pictures I take (so I must be a great photographer). I shyly mention that I have a great Nikon digital camera that makes me look good.
I say, “Yes, it does. Thank you."
What l get ocassionly is, "Did you take that photo with your phone?" I always say that I would ditch all my camera equipment, if that was the case!

"Oh, thank you!"
As much as we like to think that great pictures are the result of our great skill. It also helps to have a great camera.

Nobody likes a smart ass.
That, and most people who comment in that manner are not aware of the intricacies involved in making a good image.

“Yeah, and my kitchen utensils make a really good gourmet meal for me every night!”
Unfortunately, quite a few PHOTOGRAPHERS use that warped logic when buying gear! Hint: It ain’t the tools that make images. It’s the creator using them!
A "thank you" is my response. I heard another photographer say something like "And if I had Emeril's pots I'd be a great cook, too."
