Good morning all. Wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem. The zoom grip - the rubber knurled ring around the barrel of my 200-500 seems to have expanded and is now loose. I live in hot/muggy SW Florida and when birding the rubber expands. When I want to zoom in/out using my thumb and index finger, the rubber bunches up. It does zoom correctly. This does not happen in cool weather. The lens is still in warranty (about 1.5 yrs old); I am just worried about dust/sand/dirt getting under the rubber ring and into the camera. Have any other 200-500 owners seen this ?

I hav a 200-500 no problems so far, except to use it on my gimbel I had to order a different mounting bracket , the original only has one bolt hole , which for the weight and attached camera was unsafe . Apchanging the bracket solve dthe issue .
Might be a good idea to call Nikon.
I am here in SW FL also and have not heard of that problem, Billa. I'd contact Nikon about it.
One thought does come to mind. Does your lens ever sit in your hot parked car during these summers???
Not on mine ...time to call Nikon .., warranty or not ...let them fix it .., they will check the lens out for any other issues and return it as good as new ...
Thousands of shots in all kinds of weather and so far so good. I'd be sending the lens in for a check-up!
Live in central Florida. No problem with mine except I don’t get out to use it as much as I should.

NO. Call Nikon, and ask for a pre-paid label. Send it in and have it fixed.Case closed.

Definitely a warranty issue. I wonder if there is anything that would do that to the rubber - chemicals, heat, etc.

I have had my 200-500 now through two Florida winters with everyday use, not one issue. I have never had a rubber ring on a Nikon lens go bad. But, there is always a first time for everything.
My Nikon 24-70 rubber zoom ring had to be replaced ... years ago ...no reason for the problem ..? It can happen ..I believe it is fairly rare ...but then my new Rolex had to go in for warranty ...to replace a barrel Jewel .. go figure ... as the famous quote says “shit happens”

Or like when the old man's horse died. He said, funny, that never happened before.

I doubt the intense cold of Florida winters would bother that rubber ring.

Lawyer to old man on witness stand: "Have you lived in this town your whole life?"
Old man: "Not yet."
