Another new find for me. I think this is a member of the Wasp family although it looks more like a bee of some kind to me.
It is a bee. There are two bee families, Andrenidae and Halictidae, which have small black bees. Finally, there are the carpenter bees. We usually think of these as being really big, but actually there is a group of carpenter bees that are small -- called the small carpenter bees, in the genus
Ceratina.
Anyway, I don't really know what family this one is in, but the closest match I saw was an Andrenid bee and in particular the genus
Andrena:

As always, you fellows are the greatest. Not only in your depth of knowledge in the insect world but control of the finesse of your macro photography as well.
I saw one of those for the first time today but my photos of it were all out of focus. Nice job on yours, Gary.
I can walk the field and see various insects and when I turn around and come back the same path I see an entirely different set. I think to myself, "Where the heck did you come from?"
