BM (for Big Mike) on Amazon..Just make sure you go for the premium ones-2 for around $30!..Been using them for 1.5 years..No problems with my D500 and Nikon Grip;..Also PRO-Master has worked fine as well during the same period..If anything, I've noticed that both of these alternates seem to be good for about 10-20% more shooting than the OEM Nikon battery!

Has anyone used one of the alternatives to the Nikon EN-EL15a Rechargeable Li-ion Battery? Is so, which one and what was your experience? Would you recommend?

Thanks.

Tom B. (jtbdal)

I spent $2000.00 on one Nikon and $3300.00 on another. The EN-EL15a is $54.95 brand new. So, the cost of that battery represents about 2.7% of the cost of the $2000.00 camera and about 1.6 % of the $3000.00 camera.
When it comes down to cost, what is a missed shot worth.

Yes! I Bought a couple for my D7000 from B&H that their person recommended and never had a problem. I no longer own that camera but give them a call.

Normally I only use OEM batteries, but that being said, I had good experience with Wasabi.

Tom, my preference is original equipment.I've had other 3rd party batteries that worked just as well as the Nikon version, however some only lasted a fraction of the time when compared to the original camera battery. Also, one battery would not fully charge. After charging overnight, it only showed 75% when placed in the camera. Perhaps I just got two duds, but I would steer clear of any 3rd party battery. It is all boils down, you get what you pay for.

I have several Wasabis that actually OUT-PERFORM the OEM batters for Nippon, eh ?

I bought an EN-EL 15 B from B & H for $149.00. It works great, but now I see that The 15 B is no longer being made. The new kid on the block will be the Nikon EN-EL 15 C, so save your money for the new battery. No sense buying a discontinued battery when an updated version is around the corner.

Nikon does not make batteries.

I'll say that again.
Nikon does not make batteries.

Nikon OEM batteries are third party.

I have used Wasabi batteries in 5 Nikons and never had problems, including the Wasabi BTR-ENEL18-JWP and charger with a D850 for a lot less than "OEM".

Agree 100% - reason I have 3rd party back-up battery(s) when the OEM goes dead. I have a $50K automobile, but still buy gas at the lowest priced station.

Why would anyone pay premium for a top tier camera and then take the cheap route for something as mundane as the battery?
My advice - stick to the OEM.

Please go back up and read my previous response.

Nikon "OEM" batteries are not made by Nikon. They are no better than other third party batteries. Nikon wants us to believe their batteries are better so they can charge $150 for a $46 battery! If you're comfortable paying an extra $104 for the name, it's your money.

The battery in question is about $50.00. Not $150.00.
And, there are many, many, tests showing that OEM batteries hold their charges longer and are a better value over time than third party batteries. Just sayin.

I have never seen such a study. Can you provide citations?

I have seen this claim repeated many times though. With no supporting evidence.

My own experience with non OEM labeled and priced (the camera makers may not make batteries...coflicting reports) has been good.

And then there is this: https://www.diyphotography.net/nikon-recalls-popular-batteries-potential-heating-melting-issues/

And the non informed, little educated continue to populate this site. You are just another example of folks who want to be spoon fed instead of getting off you rear and looking things up for yourself.
You of little effort bore me.
