Has anyone used one of the alternatives to the Nikon EN-EL15a Rechargeable Li-ion Battery? Is so, which one and what was your experience? Would you recommend?

Thanks.

Not sure the aftermarket has caught up to the 'a' version of this battery. Personally, I neither use nor recommend anything other than OEM batteries for several reasons which have been debated many times before. B&H carries Watson batteries and Adorama carries another brand. There's probably 20 alternatives, perhaps more, available throughout the Internet. Best of luck.

Normally I only use OEM batteries, but that being said, I had good experience with Wasabi.

Tom, my preference is original equipment.I've had other 3rd party batteries that worked just as well as the Nikon version, however some only lasted a fraction of the time when compared to the original camera battery. Also, one battery would not fully charge. After charging overnight, it only showed 75% when placed in the camera. Perhaps I just got two duds, but I would steer clear of any 3rd party battery. It is all boils down, you get what you pay for.

In the D800 and D810, I mostly use Nikon batteries but I also have a Watson brand battery for each. I have rotated the Watson battery through the cameras when I am out shooting for an entire day, usually in extreme cold and, I have never experienced the Watson performing any less than the Nikons.

Just posted below paragraph in similar thread - my first of type you mentioned. I have used high-quality 3rd party for years (like Watson & Wasabi) in multiple cameras, camcorders (stand alone), etc and have never had a problem. Sometimes have only gotten 80% of the use as the original OEM but at 20-25% of the cost I can live with that.

I bought two Kastar thru Amazon, along with a twin charger, a few months ago for my Nikon at 60% cost of 1 Nikon battery alone. Exact duplicate of OEM battery even to color but with actually a little higher mAh listed. Too new to tell you life expectancy but they were highly rated reviews and I like they have their own large brick & mortar distribution center here in USA.

I have two of the Powershot 2000 brand EN-EL15a batteries that I use in my D850 and D500 bodies. Both have given me terrific service overall, but do give a slightly lower shutter actuation count per charge, about 1800 shots per charge compared to 2100 shots per charge for the OEM. But at 1/3 the cost I can live with that.

If I was going to use aftermarket I would prefer a brand I know. Duracell has the battery you are looking for.

You can't go wrong with any Duracell battery. I had a Sunpak 611 strobe with 4 duracells in it, one went bad, extremely corroded the terminals. I contacted Duracell, they sent me a check to cover a replacement unit at that time ($360+). They definetly stand behind what they sell.

Only one I have found in New Zealand is Wasabi. Had bad experiences with Kastar. Tried 4 times with different shipments from the seller but at the end kept the last 2 for use in my D800. Various symptoms, initially not even recognised in the D850 moving on to only running for about 20 shots. All replacements here only labelled as EN-EL15 but supposed to work as EN-EL15a. I think most sellers here work with their fingers crossed. The Wasabi also only labelled as EN-EL15 and seems to have about 95% capacity.

For my D7100, I use OEM and Bower XPDNEL15 that are 600 mAh more than OEM (2500 mAh vs 1900 mAh) and the Bowers work just as good (with longer duration) than the OEMs.

I only use Nikon batteries in my D5100 and D750. Of which I have 3 and 2 respectively for each camera. I did receive an unfamiliar brand, a RE-Fuel with the accessory kit that was included with my D750. It has been in the D750 once, just to check it's charge level. I wouldn't leave it in the camera, and have not considered using it at this point.
