I have a Nikon D7200. I have it set to clean sensor at shutdown. When I turn the camera off, nothing displays in the monitor.
How do I know if it is automatically cleaning the sensor or not?

How do you know that light in your refrigerator turns off when you close the door?

Stop down and take a photo of an isolated part of the sky (all blue) or a sheet of paper. Zoom in and scan the image. If you see no spots, it’s clean. If there are spots, you may need to clean it manually, or pay to have it done.

They may be using silent squeegees. If you listen carefully, though, you should be able to hear them whistle while they work.

Take a leap of faith - is there dust on your sensor? If not, there's a good chance that it's cleaning itself.

I installed a peephole camera so I can verify by WiFi.

I believe the only time the camera indicates cleaning is being performed is when you select “Clean Now.”

I have opened the refrigerator door really really fast, and the light was still on. So its just marketing.

I want to tell you that it is done automatically but you should know that the cleaning machine used by Nikon is a joke.
I have used Olympus cameras for several years and not once I had to clean the sensor.

I have an Olympus EM1 Mark ll, and have not had to clean the sensor, but read that if I do clean it, I must do it with the camera turned "ON" so the in body stabilization will keep the sensor still, otherwise it will move around.

You must learn to trust technology.

The auto cleaner just vibrates the sensor, so it's not going to removes everything. It could still need manual cleaning someday.
