I have read a paper (serious University research) many years ago that found in those duos the "dumb, clueless" one often was the real brains of the act and the leader. It takes some serious smarts to act that clueless and keep it all consistent and straight.

That is your take.
This act was really about a fast talking word artist and a "Naive", not dumb, person who just gets confused by the machine gun delivery of the "straight man". People who think two different ways. And the fusion results in a funny routine.
People who talk like Abbot make poor teachers because they never explain everything, they just deliver it in a constant stream leaving the majority of their students feeling like Costello. Confused and clueless.
Also researchers found that most of the time the straight man was not the smarter one and leader of the duo. It was the supposed clueless one with the brains. It takes seriously intellect to act that clueless, keep it consistent and still keep the whole routine straightened out.
