When I develop my photos I like to have them in proximity of 5000 pixels x 1700 pixels, (rule of thirds)

If you mean you want a 2:3 ratio, you should be using 5000 pixels by 3333 pixels

Would this apply to say a 4 x 6 photo being that 4 is 2/3 that of 6 this a 2:3 ratio?

I would say, with the 15 responses to this post, the O.P. has learned much more than they had bargained for! And thanks to those posts just maybe we have educated just one more person entering the photography world....

Not to be critical or curmudgeonly , but I think the OP needs to learn the language of photography to post a question on The Hog.

Not a rule, but a suggestion. Sometimes breaking the so called rule is the only way to get an image with good composition.
