My First Decent Moon.

I finally got a moon shot I am happy with. I've tried many times and just kept getting stuff like photo 1. Tonight I just set up and took a shot and tweaked settings until I got something that looked good. I ended up with ISO at 800, shutter at 1/180 and f/11. Used D40 with EF 100-300 f/4.5-5.6 USM at 300mm. The sky ended up all dark but the moon finally has features.

Yes, it feels very good. I owe thanks to the fine people here at UHH. I used to be a Full Auto or P mode shooter, but I've been cured. :lol:

I assume you are referring to WB, it was on auto. I initially set it to Cloudy as per Brian Peterson but I did something and it was at Auto for this shoot.

The ever helpful Nikonian, thanks. I knew this info was here, but didn't have time to look for it. I was driving home at around 9:00 PM and looked into the sky and saw the moon shining with some cloud across it. When I got home I grabbed my camera, longest lens I have and my tripod and headed for a place to try my luck and new found techniques.

Thanks MTNMan, I'd like to have a longer lens but that's down the road. Your moon looks a bit sharper than mine. It looks B&W to me, did you convert it?

No, I actually set my Nikon D90 for sunny.

No, it is in color. But I did take it in RAW and didn't do anything to the white balance.
ACR (Adobe Camera Raw), a necessary step in Photoshop Elements for RAW images, does sharpening when converting it to a jpeg. I used 1/1000 s and remote release to get it as sharp as possible. OS off because on a tripod.

Wow 1/1000s? I guess I need to try that. Guess at that speed I didn't think the hole would be big enough to let the light in for a moon shot. As usual preconceived thoughts are a draw back.

second one good..you want the detail..not just a white, shiny orb
