Waiting To Shoot The Moon - An exercise in low light.

I shot these back in January the night after the super blood blue moon. I had shot the eclipse the night before. I wanted to practice with my new 50mm prime lens in low light.

Please feel free to download and comment or tinker.

Ms Evans if this was an exercise in low light shooting it would seem to be a success other than the horizons need straightening.
I am a little puzzled because when looking at the exif info the first two shots were NOT taken with a 50mm lens and the second two are thumb nail size on download with exif missing? If you have a 50mm prime they are a fine tool and good way to master basic techniques but it appears not to have been used here.

You are correct about the lens.i apologize for the misinformation. I had forgotten I also used my zoom lens that evening. I just assumed they were all the 50mm. I didn't have access to my computer when I posted them and just used my phone. I will be more careful in the future.

I like to think i have gotten a little better since i took these. Looking back on them now I see a lot of issues but at the time I was pretty proud of them.

Great exposures! And how satisfying to look back and see your progress.

Regarding straightening - occasionally an OP will mention that a shoreline, especially one angling away from us, may appear to be unlevel but in reality it isn't. Seems, though, when horizontal to the top and bottom of the frame, it's best to be careful about keeping that level to the viewer's eye.

Your thread has brought back fond memories of when I would set up a tripod and await the first glimpse of the full orange moon rising above the bare hills that surround Yakima. Nowadays I just drive around randomly at sunrise trying to get something interesting before the moon sets

When I shot the eclipse I got up at 3:30 in the morning and drove out to the middle of nowhere to get away from the city lights. I was by myself so I set up my tripod outside the car where I could reach it from inside the car. I kept thinking this would be a great place to dump a body. No one would find it for days.

As I was shooting a large pickup truck stopped and a man got out and approached my car. As he got to my car I told him "Stop where you are don't come any closer." He was a smart Texas country boy and knew what that meant. He stopped and threw up his hands and assured me he was stopping to see if anyone needed help. I explained what I was doing and he went on his way.

I have found places around Dallas I would love to shoot but they are not in parts of town I would feel comfortable being out of the car by myself especially at night. I found these awesome 20ft tall metal sculpted tulip buds. I just know there is an awesome shot there somewhere and I am tempted but it's close to a homeless camp.

Oh the things we must suffer to practice our art!

I understand 100%. My wake-up call was last July when I took a nasty tumble in the mountains. It was near a tourist photo-stop, so I wouldn't have lain for days, but there is no cell service and no nearby towns.

Play smart, stay safe, make sure your weapon is loaded
