Good Morning to all. We know that there are adapters to add a lens designed for one camera to be able it being used on another mount. An example is the adapter to use Canon FF/EFS lens on thier M series cameras. There are many examples of IS being in a body of the camera rather than inside the lens. Would it not be possible to have an adapter with built in IS to use with all of the non-IS lenses? I have never seen a thread discussing this possibility. Is it feasable?

Thanks for reading this question and I hope it makes sense.

Greg

I don't think so, I believe that in lens stabilization is an intregral part of the lens construction.

I never heard of any adapter that would b able to do that.

I think the stabilizer you need is a tripod...

I agree 100% on a tripod and I use a tripod or monopod most of the time, even with lenses that have IS. Thank you for your comment.

A tripod isn't the answer to everything. It only works to prevent camera motion, so if you are shooting moving subjects, you will still have to use a high enough shutter speed to stop the action.

Never said it was the answer to everything... Obviously you need to have enough shutter speed to stop the subject motion if the subject is moving...even when panning. But I understand the OP's question and the tripod would be the most universal answer without getting into all the various focusing nuances of say Nikon lenses.

Best,
Todd Ferguson

It looks like there is no such an adapter and if anyone came up with a design it may still cause other problems. I appreciate all of the responses. Thank you.

Pentax cameras have IS in the camera body so even old screw mount Takumar lenses are in essence "Image Stabilized." Now, it that a sufficient reason to buy a Pentax camera? You'd have to answer that yourself. I have many other reasons for having many Pentax cameras.

It really isn't feasible from a technology nor commercial point of view. The best adapter would be a mirrorless body with IS in body. Canon has some, but I expect it to improve over the next couple of years.
Are there specific lenses that you wish to use?

You have a good point there. Tripods stabilize the camera for sharp images. It is also invaluable for composition.
I would say that tripods are not accessories they are a necessity.

Steadicam is a brand of camera stabilizer mounts for motion picture cameras invented by Garrett Brown and introduced in 1975 by Cinema Products Corporation. It mechanically isolates the operator's movement, allowing for a smooth shot, even when the camera moves over an irregular surface.
