I read that you are in the market for a new computer. I also use Elements 14. After my last Windows 10 update, Elements slowed down and then didn't let me process photos. I wound up buying a new laptop with 16 gigs of RAM.

I suggest that you do what I did. I went to a local computer store (that also sells refurbished computers/laptops). My first option would have been to upgrade my memory; I couldn't do that. The second option was to purchase a refurbished computer that will meet my needs (I had to take option 2). When I explained what I would do on the laptop they put me in the right direction and showed me the laptops that would fit my needs; the laptops did range in price. Like I said, I purchased a refurb with 16 gigs or RAM and I race through my editing!

While I was at the computer store they ran a quick diagnostic on my old laptop; sure enough, it was eating up RAM. They couldn't pinpoint the sources of the problem, but the problem existed (and started right after the Windows 10 update). The techies thought it might be a problem with the code in the update.

I will never purchase a laptop at a big box store; the employees may or may not know what they're talking about. The people at my local computer store (Kaplan Computers, Manchester, CT) know what they're talking about and won't try to oversell you OR sell you the wrong thing.

Hi. I had that happen too, when I was starting to select something in my photo on Photoshop Elements 14, just before my old(5 years old) Toshiba laptop completely died last week. However, when I looked at my storage information in my computer settings file, it said I had only used about 8 GB of total storage, and had at least 15 GB left. So it was confusing to me that it would say that. I know when I was looking at new laptops it would tell the stats for each of the two types of memory each computer had. I bought a Dell Inspirion 15, 5000 series with 12 GB memory and 1 TB hard drive, and still don't really know what that means exactly. A Salesman at one store had told me what memory and features we're important to use Photoshop.

This is good to know, thank you for responding.

Lots of people only put their computers to sleep mode so that updates can work overnight. Do you shut down the computer between sessions? Try doing that. Sometimes programs continue running if you don't and use RAM without you being aware of it.

Yes, I turn my computer completely off. Should I consider unplugging it also?

Apple is the Photographers choice for post processing. RAM is the same among manufactures.

I never do, except in a real bad lightning storm if I'm home.

If a computer is not turned off once and a while the RAM could still be allocated to a program that does not appear to be running. Rebooting also should clear the allocation.

Thank you. Is this similar to Refreshing, if not, please, how does one go about Rebooting?

I had the same problem after a Windows Update. As I recall, I had to contact Adobe or Microsoft and the problem got solved in a hurry,.

Thank you, Adobe sounds as if it may be a good fix.

If you know someone that could install the memory you could order from Newegg I like G skill memory I use it in all my PC's.

Thank you for the link, hoping beyond hope that this may be fixable without having to purchase a new or refurbished computer.

Everybody is talking about RAM which is a correct answer to an extent. I have a laptop that had 4 G of RAM. It ran PSE 13 without any problems. Is there any way you could try to load the program on another computer? If you can, check the preferences under file in the menu bar. Go down to performance and check history. Change to 50 or less. That will allow you to use the program with less RAM.

Geoff

Thank you, I am willing to try anything to keep from going to expense of another computer.

What happens when one unplugs a computer completely from the electricity?

Nothing.

During storms it inhibits a power surge from harming the system since it is physically disconnected from the outlet.
(Surge suppressors can only do so much.)

I do not understand even what RAM is, fairly new to all these technical terms.

Think of doing a math problem in your head. When you have to start jotting thing down on paper, then you've run out of RAM.
