Yesterday I purchased a lens from Amazon. For the first time ever, they added sales tax. They were ready. But it was still less than my local camera store. Those that do a high volume of sales will almost always have cheaper prices than those doing a lesser amount.

I lived in Salem NH in 1983 when we were building the Seabrook NPS. I remember all of the stores on the North side of the state line and parking lots full of cars with Mass license plates. I also remember the fun we had when we went to Canobe Lake Park. My kids really enjoyed themselves that day. Your state is really beautiful, but high real estate taxes are the price you pay for not having a state sales tax. We have both in Illinois and a disfunctional state government as well.

The ruling I read said the states may not must collect taxes.

Just ruled in the Supreme Court! Sales tax must be collected for all internet purchases.....that includes our favorite on-line camera stores! 😰. On the other hand, local/state budgets that rely on state sales taxes will not have to raise your tax bills as high (that's a joke, of course they will anyway!)

Yes, definitely a joke - on us! Since when did more income keep them from raising taxes? I can figure a price increase of 8% on everything I buy online now. That's how politicians serve their constituents. Will they repair roads and bridges now, or hire public employees who were laid off? Not very likely.

If a sale takes place in CA, it's hard to justify paying a sales tax to NY.

I've always paid sales tax on Amazon. You've been lucky up till now.

Many if not most items I purchase on Amazon are taxed. I am not surprised the loophole of taxes not collected on internet purchases are being closed.

Come on Bob, you ever know a government entity that wouldn't take the money if it was offered to them? It's automatic, slam dunk, count on it!

Are you sure? I was under the impression that the Court said that states CAN collect, not MUST collect, not that it really makes any difference.

Not quite right. The Supreme Court ruled that States MAY now collect sales taxes on internet sales. MAY is the jam in which we now will wade into on an individual state basis.
Amazon has been collecting sales tax for a while now.
It will be interesting how they will do this on ebay since their are so many individual's selling on ebay.
States just could not give up that kind of revenue. It has been coming for a while.
Was not a surprise to me at all. I am a big time ebay seller and will have to wait and see how ebay will handle this. It would make sense for THEM to collect sales taxes at the point of sales.

Online retailers, who haven't been required to collect sales tax up until now, have been depending on people buying from them and not paying the required use tax to their states, because of the difficulty in enforcing the law. This decision just levels the playing field and will help local merchants. Of course the local merchants will have to provide good prices and service to take advantage of it.

I sell professional camera gear. I don’t sell online but I do sell to local people. Most of my jobs are big design build a integration video and sound projects but I do have people that will buy a tripod or veidio camera etc.

In Florida you can get a tax exemption certificate if you’re TV production business probably but not sure if you get that exception if your a wedding videographer.

The exemption is for hardware not media.

Collecting tax may help local business. I use to do about $150,000 a month in box sales but over the years I’ve lost most of that to Amazon.

Yep, I used the wrong term, but doesn't change the fact that states WILL collect the tax....🤑

I believe the ruling gives states the right to collect. I'm not sure (Haven't seen the whole thing) if the retailer has to collect the tax, or just notify the states. Amazon is already collecting taxes in a multitude of states. It's all done by computer.

Yep. As soon as Amazon built a distribution center in my state, sales tax was added.
