I have seen many whales in the Bay over many years but never one breaching. This was just off Alcatraz with the Bay Bridge in the background. The photo was taken by my friend in a sailboat. The Cordell Bank just north of San Francisco has one of the four best upwelling-driven ecosystems in the world which means an abundance of food for the whales, dolphins and seals. She had a Nikon D5500 1/2000 f-8 iso 400 220mm . . . and was very alert to get this one.
She caught one great image

I think this is the best whale shot I've ever seen. Tell her she did great.

I will let her know Jeanbug, thanks
That is a GREAT shot! It is remarkable for how much out of the water the whale is, the flippers etc, great timing! and the location makes it that much more remarkable. Amazing!
