Since I've gotten active on UHH, I've noticed a particular thing. There are a lot of ill-informed, poorly written, or borderline offensive posts asking questions that might be trolling, might be naïve, or might just be offensive by their apparent greed and unconcern for others.

As in any public forum, these attract their share of unsupported opinion, of irrelevant and sometimes silly responses (see any Nickanon or PP thread), and sometimes outright derision for the opening thesis.

But one thing I've noticed is that there are a number of people on UHH who respond sincerely, who offer opinionated but not dismissive advice, and who give their legitimate thoughts on the most outrageous of questions and theses. You can ask, "Is the Nikon Dxxx or Canon Dsxx really a piece of overpriced crap compared to the "Nonamekon?" and you'll get some sincere and honest responses, from people who are knowledgeable, and offer fifty percent "what" and fifty percent "why" when they post.

So here's to you folks - the ones who treat everyone assuming their sincerity, offer well-informed advice, and recognize that the "right answer" for one person is not necessarily the right one for another. It isn't easy - at times, there seem to be more stupid or deliberately provocative questions than there are sincere but ill-informed ones.

You folks are the gold in the ore of UHH posts, the polished gemstones among the druse, the reason I keep coming back here for both information and for the occasional tidbit of information or experience I can contribute. I'm trying every day to be more like you, and less cynical, snarky, or confrontational.

So here's to you. I'm not going to call out names, but I hope you know who you are, and know that so many people who populate this place appreciate your contributions. I have at least a half dozen regulars with high post counts in my mind, but no doubt, there are many others I haven't yet noticed. I wish I had your patience, knowledge, and ability to articulate them.

Here's to you!

Andy

I wish I had your gift for language; that's exactly what I would say if I could put it so beautifully.

Wonderful piece. Thank you so much for that....and that is exactly the reason I keep coming back, too.

I hate it when I waste my time on a post that has nothing to say, so I ask myself if I really have something new and useful to add to the conversation before posting. Sometimes I erase a long-winded statement before hitting 'send'. When I do there is usually someone else who will say it better and more succinct than I.

Love photography...not good at it, never will be, always trying. Unlike you, if it runs through my head, it runs through my keyboard...probably shouldn't, waste of time, but does. This really is a good place to learn and I intend to learn until my last sun sets. There's every kind of person here. I like knowing we have some who are so dedicated to helping others learn. Some are here to learn, some (like me) just to show what they love to shoot and some to make friends with others who love photography. And then there are those who'd rather be right than be friends. That's fine too. I think most of us waste a little time, but I also think it's very nice when people can share opinions. Food for thought.

Thanks to UHH for all the helpful advice. Its really pretty easy to sort out the rest. And, there's not that much that is worthless. And, that is really easy to sort out.
Thanks again!

Andy,
Thanks for starting this chain and for demonstrating the kind of attitude you write about. It's sometimes disheartening to read diatribes and nasty comments when there are so many folks who just want to learn and share about their photography hobby, passion or career. I never learn anything from someone's cruel or impertinent comments. I really appreciate your efforts here. May we all learn and make UHH a more constructive and instructive place for everyone.

Well, very well written, thoughtful, and rather precise in your thoughts. Lots of folks probably think the same as you do...but just don't take the time to articulate it...or maybe feel inadequate trying to do it. I, for one, appreciate your comments and thank you for the post. Open forums can be both frustrating, and yet, very educational and entertaining...and I hope the latter applies most of the time. Thanks!

Completely agree. If you can't give a sincere and helpful answer than just don't respond.

Thank You Andy for a great written article. I've read a lot of very helpful posts on UHH. After years of reading here think I know who posts fact, some post opinion and some just nasty trolls. As in any forum after time you realize who knows the profession and who just like to post for the sake of posting. We were all new to photography at one time and the worst thing to do to a new comer is to make them feel unwelcome by making them feel stupid in their new hobby by asking basic questions. I've seen some pretty unwelcome comments directed at their posts. ie: just read the post from whenever that explains this. They don't know, they're new. There are some that will take the time to write back explaining in a very professional manor and give help. Some are just nasty.
