All the instruments seeking intelligent life in the universe are pointed away from Earth.

And, apparently, for good reason.

...
"So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure,
How amazingly unlikely is your birth;
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere out in space,
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth"! - Monty Python.

Years ago, Calvin, of "Calvin and Hobbes" observed that the surest sign of intelligent life in the Universe is the fact that they haven't chosen to contact us.

But what sort of life created the instruments to point outward, or cared to look?

Among the hundreds of billion of galaxies, with their billions of stars, I believe “intelligent” life exists on many planets in the various Goldilocks zones. One scary answer as to why we have not been contacted by the most advanced civilization is that, unfortunately, to paraphase Pogo, it is us.

I think it was Neil deGrasse Tyson who said that aliens have already visited earth but found no intelligent life and left.

Just make sure that they don't point their telescopes toward Washington DC.

Calvin also opined that the meaning of life was to live long enough to reproduce before you get eaten by something else.
