Are you asking for setting up your camera in "Manual Mode", or shooting "Hand Held"? The first is no different than any other mode, as long as you know what effect you want in your pictures. The second is a question of how steady you are in holding the camera, can you lean on something, can you steady your body so you reduce camera shake. I shoot hand held almost always, because I hate the burden of dragging a tripod with me when I am traveling, or walking on the streets of New York, or shooting my granddaughter's soccer games. I usually use a fast shutter speed to help me freeze the motion. In soccer and track I occasionally try panning, still hand held, it usually works well for me. For action shots I use the multi shot setting and shoot five to ten bursts. By the way I practice panning on cars on a busy highway near my house, that way I am ready for the somewhat slower soccer players.

There was a time (not too long ago) when all cameras were full manual. No auto anything. You set the ASA (now ISO) of the film. There was no on or off switch, as there was no electronics. So you had 2 choices-shoot manual, or put the camera away. Then you set the speed and used the aperture ring to adjust the match needle to set the f-stop, and focused with the focus ring. After a while you got a feeling for correct exposures. So just do it, there is nosubstitute for experience. Yes you will make mistakes, but misrakes don't count as long as you learn from them. There are situations when I use each of the settings, even (gasp) auto.

"I Am Shooting," a great mnemonic on shooting in manual mode especially for a beginner like me. I love the art of mnemonics. It encourages creativity but most importantly, simplifies a lot of the thinking/memory processes in life such as education, work, and the daily routines. (Then Google showed up!) The following is a brief tutorial on the topic of shooting manual mode which I find very helpful. The lecturer, Spyros, is quite a character, to boot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJSNTM-JQeM

Yes, that is who I had learned and watched his Videos on "I AM SHOOTING", simple and easy, he also has many other excellent learning videos that I have enjoyed and applied in my learning process.
