I am asking a basic question - why have a memory card reader? Are they faster than downloading from the camera or just convenient? If you get one, it appears that compatibility with your memory cards becomes a complicating factor.

Mike the reason I use one is that it appears to be faster. Secondly, I don't have to have my camera turned on to transfer files from a memory card to a computer. Yes, the physical size of the card plays a factor into which of the card readers one chooses to use. Some readers offer several slots for various sized cards. So, it's wise to make sure the reader will accept the card one uses.

It's nice when your target computer has an SD slot.

If I get one, will my photos be as good as yours, Paul?

Convenience of not tying up camera or knocking over my coffee cup or camera off desk while transferring photos, etc. Readers cost under $10, work with SD cards instantly - nothing else needs to be done.

Mostly convenience for me. While I'm using the card reader to transfer images, I can simultaneously charge the camera's battery, as the camera won't be needed for the transfer.

1) Yes, it is faster.
2) D/L from camera direct eats up battery.

Back in the day when USB was slow and WiFi did not exist, I started transferring by inserting the CD card, now AS cards in a reader. It has worked well for me. So I continue doing it.

I tend to leave my memory card in the card reader a long time, I have found that if I plug the card in through the camera I drain the battery FAST. So, the card reader to the rescue. I have used many different brands of card readers and they all seem to work out fine.

I don't use a card reader. I insert the stick in my Mac and upload to LR. Over and out.

I used the supplied cable once to connect the camera to my PC, but the fit to the camera was so tight I had to work hard to get it disconnected. I now have two good SD cards and I alternate them between the camera and the reader.

Pop the card out of the camera and into the reader. Otherwise, you have to find the correct cable and then plug it into two different things.
