I use an external 4 bay docking station for internal drives by StarTech:

http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-eSATA-Drive-Docking-Station/dp/B004I6OCRO/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1343847095&sr=8-6&keywords=startech+dock

Docking stations come in various configurations from one to four drives and connected eSATA, USB-2, USB-3 and/or firewire. They allow you to mount and swap SATA internal HD's of any size.

I've found the docking station to be more reliable and more versatile than self contained external HD units.

Also available are RAID enclosures with hot swappable drives similar to:

http://www.amazon.com/G-Technology-Firewire-Interfaces-Applications-0G01793/dp/B003ZMF2N0/ref=sr_1_41?ie=UTF8&qid=1343847930&sr=8-41&keywords=raid+enclosures+hot+swappable

There are less expensive ones available, also ones available sans drives where you populate it with your own HD's.

I use a Seagate 1 TB but realize I will need a bigger one soon like a 2-3 TB.

I've had a Buffalo Terastation for 6 years. Recently had a problem - power supply went up, repaired, all works well again. Has 4 250gb drives configured to RAID 5. Just expanded by buying a Syslogic - 2 3tb drives configured to RAID 1, I believe (1 drive is a mirror image of the other). Am working toward keeping documents and backup on the Buffalo, images on the Syslogic

Just my way of doing things but I never use an external hard drive for storage that isn't in a air cooled (fan) case. I once saw a test report on drive temp etc. with and without a fan and never went back. As I said it's just my opinion and I realize that 98% of the external HD's are not air cooled.

I've used Western Digital for years with no problems. I currently have a 3TB on my photo computer.
