There are not many examples that convey fatherhood in the invertebrate world, but here is one. This is a bad cell phone picture of a water bug (Belostoma sp.). In these predatory insects the female lays eggs on the back of the male and the male is obliged to carry the eggs and provide protection until they hatch. I am not sure if he is even necessarily the father.

Thanks. This was (is) my first Father’s Day away from my kids. Currently in the Denver Airport waiting for the last leg of my flight.
