I have been trying and following instructions from Nikon on updating my D-500. I download the software from Nikon. I format a card and plug it into my laptop and download the software onto the card. I put the card back into the camera and it does not show up on the card. I have done this several times. What am i missing?

When you say it does not "show up," how are you expecting to see it? What menu item have you selected?

You don't put the update file on your card, only the ".bin" file. AND it needs to go in the cards root directory, not in a folder. Also, you have to leave your second card slot empty, the update will not be recognized if you have cards on both slots.

Also you need to select "Firmware" from the cameras menu after you have the card in.

I just did this for my D500. I took the XQD card out of my camera. I formatted the SD card in slot 2. Downloaded the update to my Apple desktop. Copied JUST the .bin file to the root of my SD card. Inserted the card back into slot 2 in my 500. Went to Setup > Firmware and it showed the usual firmware release levels but this time an update appeared at the bottom of the menu. I select this - hit OK not the center of the multifunction button. It told me what was happening and in a couple of minutes - it completed the update for the Camera from C1.13 to C1.15. Note there are two updates available - the camera (the C1.15 indication) and an LD update, indicated as LD (something to do with Lens Distortion, I believe). I reformatted the SD card and repeated the process above - downloading JUST the LD .bin file to the root of the SD card. All went OK. If you still have trouble there is a tel# on the Nikon site and they will be able to help you over the phone. Best and good luck.

Make sure the card you are using is the selected primary slot. You do not have to leave second slot empty.

I have been putting off applying this update. So this was a very useful topic!

Just to add to the confusion: When you download the file from Nikon, it is compressed. Put it in a new folder on your computer and click on the file. It will extract( or open) and create a new folder. Open this new folder and voila...you will see the .bin file already mentioned by other hoggers here. That's the file you copy to your SD card and use in the camera slot. Hope that helps😏

Are the .bin file and root directory clearly labeled as such?

The bin file is, that's all you need.
