This is a Shay Locomotive (geared locomotive). It has three cylinders mounted on the right side of the locomotive. To make room for the cylinders and balance weight, the boiler is offset to the left side (fireman's side) of the locomotive.
The cylinders drive a shaft that runs from the rear of the tender to the front of the locomotive. All axles are drive axles with a ring & pinion gear setup.
This locomotive runs on oil. The oil flows from the tender to the burner (the fireman controls the amount of oil). Steam pressure is introduced just below the burner (controlled by the fireman) which atomizes the oil into a mist and creates a very powerful roaring fire (more like a blow torch).
These locomotives were very popular in the timber industry. 15 total images.

In the center of the image is a two stage air pump. The top part is the steam side of the pump it powers the two stage air pump on the bottom. This does not run fast like air compressors. It cycles slowly but, it moves a lot of air.
The unit to the right is a water injector. Inside is a venture valve/setup. Steam enters from the top and blows thru the injector. As it blows, it pulls in water from the tender (bottom piping) and blowing it thru the injector as well.
The venture increases the psi of the water/steam to a greater amount that is in the boiler. Water goes into the boiler replenishes the water being boiled.
The three rods that extend into the cab are controls that the fireman uses to operate (and prime) the injector.

Now I REALLY want to go to Yosemite. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Jay Pat for the great images and walk around. The geared locomotives were an interesting concept.

That wonderful, emotional, lonesome wail of the steam whistle brings back so many memories I almost tear up.
I have a friend who lives in West Virginia and get to see these Shays & Heislers daily.
It is rare to see 3 of them together.
