B/W Barn

This barn is nearly in the middle of town, with houses on either side. Not much room to compose a desirable image. I went with b/w to give an old west effect. While the original image is tack sharp, showing the age of the barn, I went with a softer, moodier image. Your comments are appreciated.

Your PP does give the image an older feel. Well done!

A very nice capture, the foreground fence post gives the image a nice depth and you even got good detail in the interior.
I like it! The photo has a fine overall nostalgia look to it.

Thanks for your comments, especially on the interior. Often, barns are fairly dark inside, even when viewing them with the naked eye. In my initial pping I had lightened the inside quite a bit, but it didn't look realistic, so I went with a darker look. Again, thanks.

Hi, I.C.,
I think your treatment of the barn works well. My only concern with the image is that the “detail rich” gatepost (with chain, chain clip, and gate latch plates) in the left foreground is a strong distraction, and I keep wanting to look around the post to see more detail on the left side of the barn and middle ground fence attached, I suspect to the barn.

Makes me wish that camera perspective had been moved just a bit to the right to leave a bit of space to the left of the barn. I do, however, understand your likely desire to have have some edge occlusion of the barn by the post. Such compositional differences are testimony to the wisdom of “working the scene” with a variety of perspectives to minimize the chances of the later thought: “Gee, I oughta go back for a slightly different shot”.

Best regards,
Dave

I appreciate your viewpoint. I included the fence post because on the left side of the barn is a house--a modern house that doesn't look anything like the vintage barn. The house would have been in the frame had I eliminated the fence. I choose the lesser of two evils and put the post in the frame. Taking your suggestion I might see if I can rework the image with a goal towards keeping everything sharp, rather than the softness that it now has. Thanks for your suggestions.

I had the same thoughts as Dave. I know exactly what you mean about location though. I agonized over the ice castle that was built in our town this past winter. They built it in a busy area of town with other buildings that didn't lend to the ice castle feel of the structure at all. I decided to pop it into a panorama. Check it out. Maybe it will give you an idea of how to showcase your barn. www.500px.com/photo/253259599/aker-s-castle-by-sandra-nightski?ctx_page=1&from=user&user_id=5883322

Thank you .. and I was thinking of a beautiful field of wheat or daisies for your barn at golden hour. I shot my castle in different light than the two panos. Same time of day, but very different lighting situations. I used a blending technique in Photoshop to mix the color of all my lights and bring them together.
