I suggest the Rhode Island coastline. From Little Compton, Newport, Beavertail, South Shore, to Westerly if you like boats, harbors, cliffs, grand houses, sand dunes, waves, light houses, farms, stonewalls, old barns. Your cameras will feel warm, you'll be taking so many pictures, That's if you like these things I've mentioned.

You know it's more than 800 miles from Raleigh to Portland, right? You're gonna need more than a week You won't experience the real New England until you get past Portland (no slam against southern New England, of course ). My recommendation is to take the interstate to Freeport, Maine, then get on Route 1 and follow it east. Deer Isle and Stonington are pretty authentic:

I went around ape Breton Island 35 years ago and the beauty is etched in my memory. I also dropped my (then) new Nikon (F?) with a 70mm-200mm lens 25 feet down onto the rocks. It bounced a couple of times and was a bit scratched, but went on to take beautiful images all over the island. I've been trying to get my wife to go back but we've never gotten further than the Bar Harbor and Acadia areas (going there again this August with current digital equipment-"can't hardly wait").
Wonderful area.
Thanks to everyone for all the advice about quaint small towns along the way!
By the way, have great trip.

Try and take the ferry from Bar Harbor to Nova Scotia. We did it over night and drove for a few days
amazing. Not quite New England but great adventure. Enjoy.

Acadia National Park
I have never been there but would love to see it. Years ago I had a copy of the film the Park Dept made as part of their series about the national parks that I used in geography classes and watched over and over myself. It won a bunch of film awards, and deserved everyone of them!

You didn't really say what you were looking for beyond small towns and coastline. One of my favorite places to take relatives visiting is Plimoth Plantation. It is a living working museum where the staff are in period for 1628. They are outstanding at answering questions about almost everything from that period, including stories about other colonies that had formed.

As I always seem to do, I suggest visiting Old Sturbridge Village on the Mass. Ct. border. It is a superb early Colonial Restoration by the same Rockefeller folks who did Colonial Williamsburg VA.. Using Replo's route, It would fit for the return trip. It is about a 2 hour drive North of New Haven.

Reflecting on Linda (from Maine, of course,) this is a long trip that really deserves more time or several one week stints. Maine, for example, rivals some European Countries in total area and justifies its own trip. New England, including the Southern Part, is a densely populated region, so swift Interstate travel is NEVER assured. The scenic and iconic stops are on the State Highways which go through all the towns. Great for local Cheese, Syrup, Apples and Lobster, Crabs and Clams. But the sites are also densely packed. And often, you will find the most curiously historic un announced monument on a Town Green, or even next to an International Harvester Dealership.

Much of the Revolutionary War was fought here, mostly on foot, as well as 200 years of early pre-colonial settlements. Native American sites abound also. This area isn't conducive to the Grand Tour approach. I covered it for a few years as a Sales Rep., and it is just not one urban concentration isolated from the next. And the Connective Arteries pre-date what has become the Interstate System. Hint: Many are or were called parkways. I've been away for a while, and would love to be pleasantly surprised that those folks spent money on Infrastructure, but my expectations are low.

New England is a wonderful place and I miss it. While the Fall Foliage sets the entire landscape ablaze with a riot of colors, as the brocurists say, but the local folks they call "Leaf Peepers" rarely exceed 30MPH while driving on the only thoroughfare between where you are and the next destination you dearly want to reach by Golden Hour.

Happy Travelling,
C

Colleagues, my wife and I are planning a drive from North Carolina up the New England coast - maybe a week or two, and as far as the Canadian border (or over) and need your advice. Other than the New York and Boston areas, we have no experience with this part of the country. We’d like to concentrate on smaller towns rather than large cities and stay relatively close to the coast. Can some of you natives please share some thoughts on picturesque places / itineraries as we explore this part of our country Of course photo opportunities are a priority. Thanks in advance for the help.

I would recommend the Berkshires in central and western Massachusetts if you're so inclined. Really some pretty old and quaint towns and beautiful hills/mountains in the area.

You want to go to Cape Ann on the Massachusetts north shore. That’s primarily Rockport and Gloucester. I have spent many summers there and it is gorgeous and a tourist Mecca. Especially Bearskin Neck in Rockport. Go a little inland to Essex and get fried clams from the place that invented them: Woodman’s. There are two magnificent beaches on Cape Ann and one very good one. The best is Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester. Get there early on the weekend if you want a parking place. Here’s a sunrise photo from Long Beach on the Rockport/Gloucester line - Nikon D5000, July 2010.
