If you like that kind of stuff (and who doesn't ?) Check out the Pittsburgh PBS station QWED (we gave the world Mr Rogers !) website for a dvd made by a Pittsburgher by the name of Rick Sebak - his delivery is kind of like Andy Rooney's was but with a distinct Pittsburghese - its ha dey tak dahnton n'at. He is a filmaker who explores little known local sites and 'things that aren't there anymore'. He has a dvd's out that include the place you saw as well as a ton of things across the country. I've been there a few times. We occasionally use it as a rest stop turn around point on a motorcycle ride.

Roadside America is a great place. I first visited it 35 years ago. Just by chance I am back in the area for a visit this week. Pennsylvania Dutch territory has a lot of fun surprises like this. The near by Hawk Mountain is a great place birding and photography.

Hopefully the news story will spark more interest and traffic, been there several times and always was amazed by it. It would be a shame if it were to become a lost piece of Americana.

When I used to drive for my business, I would change my routes to include the parallel roads to the Interstates. (I.e., US-1 vs I-95) There are still many "ghost" places, especially the motels from the '40s to '60s, along the by-ways.

I-78 was "straightened" causing people not to stop to investigate the shops. Even the businesses around there are suffering. The exit is just zipped by. (The huge truck barreling down and up behind one doesn't help, either.)

Whoops, that's WQED tv, channel 13 when I lived in Pittsburgh about 50 years ago. All tv stations east of the Mississippi start with "W' and west of the Big Ditch start with "K" RFB

sorry - looks like I transposed the Q and W. Thanks for correcting. BTW one interesting thing about the W and K's starting off the station call letters - there is one station that starts with a K on the eastern side of the Mississippi - the first commercial radio station in the country is KDKA in Pittsburgh. All others follow the regular convention for call letters. Never did find the whole story about why the designations W and K or why the exception.

There's KYW in Philadelphia and WHB in Kansas City.
