In lightroom you don't have to have all your pictures of the same kind in the same folder. I can have a collection of all of my "whale" pictures, spanning 8 years, many different shoots, and files and file folders. I can choose any number of the whale pictures, rate them as you desire, and put them in the whale collection. If you want, from there you can export them to save them in any other form, external hard disk cloud, or whatever you desire, but there is no need to move them to another place, except to satisfy an OCD compulsion. You can move them within LR, which is the only way that I would recommend moving pictures on your computer, but that is for a second post. You can retrieve any picture, regardless of where it is, if you have tagged it "whale" in seconds by putting that in the text box in library. Hope that helps.

I import the same way. My folder is called Downloads Two. (Don't ask why) Sorting and key wording starts here and then they are dragged to other locations as desired.

Here's my slightly different approach: I have a folder, already "in" LR, called Initial Import, which is set as the default destination for importing images in Library mode. The images on the SD card are always copied here, with names changed to my date-time preference (also set as a default.) This folder is where I do my initial culling and add keywords. When that's all done, then images are moved to their ultimate destination folders, and the Initial Import is empty to receive the next batch when it comes along.

I've created a collection set in my pictures folder that includes all of my photos, but now I want to create collections of folders that match my description of the photos therein. In the folders view I have selected all of the folders that I want to include in the collection, but upon right clicking the selected folders there is no option to add them to a collection. How do I do this?

I highly recommend this book. It's in a league of it's own and is entirely dedicated to organizing and preserving your images using LightRoom.
