I also have used both. I wish I had started with the Arca-Swiss clamps. Just so pleasant to use.

The HejnarPhoto conversion kits look like a great idea. I'm going to look into those for the Manfrotto heads I have now.

You could also use one of these - MUCH cheaper ! - https://www.ebay.com/itm/QR-50-Quick-Release-Clamp-Plate-For-Arca-SWISS-Manfrotto-Gitzo-Transition-Socket/332501203508?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l9372

Suggestions please. I have downsized from Canons to a Fuji X-T20 with four lenses. I currently have a Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 tripod with a Manfrotto 808RC4 head and plates. I have a SLIK PRO POD 381 CF monopod with a Manfrotto 496RC2 head and plate that fit my Fuji nicely. I also have a Manfrotto MPMXPROA3 ball head.

I am happy with my mono pods/heads and my tripod. However, I need a new head for my tripod. Now the question: suggestions for a new tripod head with the Manfrotto quick release plates or should I “scrap” all three heads/plates in favor of a Arca-Swiss system and, if so, what would you suggest without breaking my somewhat limited bank? I am, by the way, not even close to being a pro photographer.

Thanks in advance.

If you are happy with the Manfrotto RC2 system, then pick up an RC2 ball head for your tripod to replace the RC4 head. The RC2 is quick to release and mount.

I can say, I really do not like the RC4 system. I still have and use a 410 Junior, but I put an Arca clamp on the RC4 plate, and now I never remove the RC4 plate.

I mostly use Arca system now, and have ball heads, gimbal heads, tilt heads, and clamps (for use on Manfrotto video heads). But it can be a big expense to move.

The big advantage to Arca is that you can put a custom base plate on your camera that matches the profile of the base, so it's not very obtrusive, and they are non-twist for added stability. I have custom base plates on most of my cameras.

If you are happy with the Manfrotto quick release system and it does all you need it to do, by all means stick with it and don't change to the Arca-Swiss system. Simply get another Manfrotto head that uses the same QR plates.

Arca-Swiss is only "better" or "necessary" for certain things.... such as gimbal heads that are used with very large telephotos. That forced me to switch from Manfrotto to A-S QR system. I also was using different format film cameras, so had two different Manfrotto... and was able to instead use A-S type QR on all of them instead. An extra long A-S lens plate also can serve as a "macro slider"... a simple, lightweight alternative to a macro focusing stage. But, there was significant cost in switching over... new lens plates for all my lenses with tripod mounting rings, new camera plates for all my cameras. I even replaced platforms on a couple Manfrotto heads, to be able to use them with the A-S system (which isn't easy with all Manfrotto heads... some that are cast as a single piece would require machining by a shop to modify them).

I can't find the MPMXPROA3 ball head you speak of but if you like the Arca Swiss plate system, then you can probably unscrew the Manfrotto clamp and install Arca Swiss clamps in there place. They can be purchased separately at many online stores and plates are cheap on eBay. I use Arca Swiss plates and clamps for everything. Or, since you already have all Manfrotto stuff, you can simply purchase some new quick release Manfrotto plates to use on your new cameras.

Replacement Arca clamps are available for some brands of ball head, but not most. The issue is that they all use a different anti-twist mount. I've done some replacements; it is expensive and troublesome.

You would think that brands that converted to Arca (such as Vanguard) would use consistent anti-twist design, and provide upgrade clamps for their older heads. That would help with brand loyalty. Haven't seen that.

Better to just get an Arca ball head.

I have Arca-Type plates and clamps for ALL of my gear that connects to just about anything!!..I dropped the Manfrotto/ Bogen type connectors about 10 years ago, and I have not looked back.. The Arca-Style plates and clamps have become so commonplace, that even the rotating lens-collar on my Tamron 150-600mm G2 has an arca plate built into the mount so it eradicates the need to add an additional plate to mount on a gimbal type or ball headed tripod (or monopod!!). I say go "ARCA"..It's here NOW and in the future!!

I've had my Arca-Swiss since 2000 and there's no reason I won't have it for the rest of my life. Would not want to live without it. I think I paid around $500 for it back then.

Hi Hedgehoggers

I decided last night at a Photo Excursion to scrap the idea of purchasing a RRS tripod after the bushings fell out while adjusting the height. Has any one experienced this?
I am still watching and waiting for replies on a Gitzo make and model with an Arc-Swiss Head. I might consider a Head from RRS.

One great thing about Arca-Swiss is that you can use L-brackets by Kirk, Really Right Stuff, and other manufacturers. I have a Manfrotto 055CX tripod and a variety of Manfrotto heads. I recently purchased an Acratech Nomad ballhead that has an Arca-Swiss clamp so I can use L-brackets. The base of the Acratech is fluted so the operator can get a better grip when tightening and loosening the head. Its base diameter is perfect for the Manfrotto 055 tripod. The flutes extend just past the base of the Manfrotto tripod base.

I had Manfrotto's universal L-bracket. It was really awkward. I ended up returning it. The Kirk and RRS L-brackets are great.

This is the best way to go for another reason. You don’t need to remove the plate for a battery change!
