I'm looking to buy either a good compact or bridge camera in the next couple of months. People on UHH have NEVER let me down when it comes to good, objective/subjective opinions, so I'm asking for your opinions now. My budget will allow me to purchase any of the latest compacts that have been released or are about to be released or I can even buy something like the Fuji X100. Having said that, you now have free reign to make your recommendations. Oh, and one other thing, please do not try and convince me to get a DSLR over a compact or bridge because my wife is also going to use the camera and she simply doesn't want a DSLR. So.....
I'm looking for your real world experiences and recommendations from those experiences. I AM WELL AWARE OF SITES LIKE SNAPSORT OR DPREVIEW OR OTHERS and I am not the least bit interested in those reviews or comparisons. I want YOUR opinion.

I can't say much for compact system but as far as a bridge system I can help a little. I just bought a Nikon Coolpix P510. I can't get around so I'm reading the manual. From what I've seen it's a great camera. OK here's the help. There is a ton of information on UHH on both of these systems, go to the top of the page and you'll see a list in blue, click on 'SEARCH' and in the box type something like bridge camera or the brands that you are thinking of. You'll get more than you wanted. Do the same with compact system.

Thanks, tramsey, for the heads up on UHH info. I've read other's posts here on UHH with the claim that the P510 can get REALLY great, sharp photos even at the long end of 1000mm. Have you had that experience?

I've owned a Fuji S200EXR in the past and really liked it....until it got stolen. Fuji has discontinued it but, I'll tell ya, I wish they hadn't because that camera was built like a tank, had a nice large sensor in it, and took great photos. Having said that, I'm really anxious to hear from someone who has direct experience with one of the latest Fuji's, like the X100 or X10 or HS30 or X-S1.

I love my Canon G12. Does most everything I want. I'm like your wife too. I refuse to lug an SLR around with me. The G12 will fit in my back pocket so my hands remain free. It's a tight fit but easy enough to get out in a hurry. If you don't care about an optical viewfinder or a hot shoe the Canon S100 has very similar specs but is very small.
If size is the primary consideration the S100 would be my choice. The last 3 S models S90,95,100 have a very big following and seem to sell like hotcakes.

I have used a Canon G9 for many years. I take it everywhere with me as a walkabout camera as opposed to lugging my SLRs.
Have a look at the Canon G1x. I have read the specification, not a review and it seems like an interesting camera. Has the advantage of an opening view screen for those awkward angle shots.

My husband had no interest in a DSLR either. Our friend had recently purchased a Sony Cybershot HX200V and loved it. My husband played around with it a little and last weekend went and bought one. He absolutely loves it. He bikes and it is light enough that he carries it with him when he does.

m in the process of asessing new bridge type cameras and have decided on the Sony RX200 also. Will be purchasing it over the tax-free weekend coming up. I have a Canon DSLR and have found that the weight of it and all the lens have become too much while I'm traveling. I need to lighten the load on my shulders and neck. Glad to hear from all with the many options.

Well now I bought a Sony hx100v. It's terrific. Zooms into orbit. Pictures look great. Really easy to shoot. Pretty much same features as everything else. Well built. $300
And an odd thought from my point of view...
it's particularly immune to "attachments". (that being it has no hot shoe, no filter ring, no input/outputs etc.)
Realistically this makes the camera much cheaper in the long run, and it makes just plain ol' shooting a real joy.
If you want to spend less... maybe Pentax X90.
I got mine on Ebay for $100. It's sort of plastic and very light weight, but photos are great. Has built in intervelometer for time lapse (which works like gangbusters). I bought these so in the event of leaving the camera unattended for many hours, if some idiot decides to run off with it, it won't break my heart.
By the way... so far so good. Some cops once thought it was abandoned and were gonna take it, until they heard it beeping every little bit. Now I have a sign and a flasher.
PS - I also use a 'yard sale' $9 tripod... same reason.
