In demo mode, a camera will capture an image and display it on the LCD. There doesn't need to be a card inserted in the camera to do that.

Even the cheapest Canon DSLR's have menu settings that will not allow the shutter to actuate without a memory card in place. I'll bet Nikons, Sonys and others do, too.

As an aside, before retirement I was photographing a wedding in the Dexter Ave Memorial Baptist Church of Martin Luther King fame in Montgomery, AL. During a lull a very nice young woman, friend of the bride, asked me if I knew how many images that the Canon Rebel's "internal memory" would hold. She mentioned that she had left her memory card in her hotel room and had been shooting right along using the camera's internal memory but was afraid that the memory would fill up before she got all the photos she wanted.

I explained what she had done, as gently as possible, showed her how to reset her camera to the setting for "don't shoot without memory card" or whatever it was called, then gave her an older compact flash card and wished her well. She asked for a business card and actually mailed the card back to me with a request to critique a few of her images.

The moral of the story, I guess is disable the "demo" mode if the camera has one and leave it off. Also the photography business is filled with pretenders who have entry level cameras with kit lenses who have gotten a few recognizable images and begun to hold themselves out as photographers. Along with excellent images (a must), consideration of others' feeling go a long way on the big day.

Yes. With one slot that can't happen. Both of my Canon's have two slots.
Good to "talk" with you.

Thank you Mark! Now I have a question. I think the purpose of having 2 cards so that you can have the camera writes to both cards and if one card fails you still have the picture. But what if a card fails as in bad contacts or something like that it would be similar to the situation where the card is not there isn't it?

Good question. Now I’m going to have to do some testing (if I can find a bad card to try in one slot).

Mark, maybe I misunderstood but on my 7 d I shoot with only an SD card and leave the 2nd slot empty normally. Don't remember that being a problem

Get your shit together the night before when you are more lucid and awake. LOL

I live in a condo community. Each year, we gather around the Clubhouse Flagpole and have a Memorial Day Flag Ceremony. I am the "unofficial" community photographer. (It means I have more than a smart phone and maybe know a little photography - all donated willingly). I shoot all kinds of community events - images are frequently posted in our quarterly newsletter, posted on a Shutterfly site I created for sharing images with the community and I post a few to our community website (I created it, and I'm the volunteer "Web Administrator". One needs to have to have training and know how to be called a "Webmaster". I fly by the seat of my pants.

So, here's the latest DUH: (Last week I posted another goof - not securely inserting my flash into the hot shoe for a family gathering)
1. The ceremony was scheduled for 8:00 AM.
2. I woke up at 6:00 AM
3. After making coffee, I began to get my cameras (5D MIII & 7D MII) ready for the shoot. Checked settings, batteries, ...
4. Got dressed, ... and went outside to see conditions, played with exposure, white balance ...
5. Decided to use flash on the 5D MIII because it was a very grey, overcast day. Took a few shots and checked them in the viewfinder.
They looked fine on the LCD
6. People began arriving at about 7:45 AM. I took a few more shots for exposure. They looked good on the LCD
7. At 7:50 AM there were about 25 - 30 people gathered.
8. Had them gather around the flagpole and took a few group shots. Looked great on the LCD
9. At 8:00 AM I shot the ceremony of lowering the old flag, raising of the new flag and folding of the old one. I got some excellent shots of the main (WWII Vet dressed in "Blues") and other participants. Moved around to get different perspectives. As I shot, the images looked great on the LCD.
At around 8:30 the gathering dispersed and I went inside, poured a 2nd cup of coffee and went to remove the cards from the 5D MIII.
F----, Ouch, I'm stupid, How could I? No images!!!

OK ya'll. What went wrong? No, I'm not offering prizes for the answer. I'm just trying to forgive myself. This catharsis helps.

Happy Memorial Day. Here is one I did capture two years ago. (please use download)

I set my camera to not operate if card is missing so I can avoid that mistake.

The card was locked, and therefor would not accept any images.

One reason I chimp.
I generally look at the past several images since I don't chimp on every shot.

I took a ton of pictures of Ken Griifey Jr. some, really close shots at the trop. I finally realized that film has a number of shots per roll, after I realized my stupidity I was so upset, game was over and that was the last time I ever had a chance to shoot a future hall of famer. I never let that happen again but for those pictures I would never get it was an extremely expensive lesson.

I wrote the following before I saw Smudgey's reply. Sorry for the reduncancy.

While I was reading your post, I thought you had spilled coffee on the SD card! Now my guess is that the proper card was in the camera, but the lock tab on it prevented writing to it. If one has a dual chip camera, this is another reason to use the second chip for backup, rather than additional storage.
