I am going to be celebrating my 70th birthday by visiting Maine. I plan to drive up US-1 from Freeport to Acadia National Park. I'm looking for some really great photo ops because this will be the only opportunity to visit Maine. I will have only 3 days in August to do this, so I really need some help trying to arrange an itinerary. I especially want to get some bird shots and sunsets with lighthouses. Any suggestions also for favorite motels to stay in?
All help will be sincerely appreciated.

PM Rob48,
he's in Portland but has some fave spots north of Freeport, I do believe....enjoy !!!
Acadia:
Otter Cliff Trail
Jordan Pond House (view of The Bubbles)
Cadillac Mountain
Thunder Hole
Bass Harbor Light (Excellent for sunset, but you'll be on rocks)
......many more as MDI is a big place
From Freeport to Bar Harbor:
Owls Head Light
Marshall Point Light
Pemaquid Point Light
Up in Lubec, if you have time, is West Quoddy point light.
Just came from Bar Harbor and Arcadia NP. We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Bar Harbor which I can highly recommend. The loop road in the park has many photo opts for coastline scenery. The Bass Harbor light house is nearby but will require a descent on the rocks to get in position to get a good shot. For sunsets drive to the top of Cadillac mountain. The view is unbelievable. You will have a great time but most of the best places will require some hiking. I’ll will post a couple of photos.
Been up and down Rte 1 (and up and down secondary/county roads on most of the 'fjords') in Maine hundreds of times, first time in 1976, last time 2016. Sooooo many places to shoot/stop, and there'll be knowledgeable people who'll (rightfully) suggest one specific place after another. All I'll say is that I NEVER failed to stop at Moody's Diner just outside Waldoboro, if only for a piece of home-made pie and a cup of coffee. Along with that --and this might sound odd--, pray for fog; it makes things Maine-ly magical.
Arcadia NP photos from last weekend.

If you drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain early enough (before sunrise) you’ll be able to photograph the earliest sunrise in the continental United States.

There IS NO "Arcadia" National Park! It is ACADIA National Park.
Pemaquid Point and its' famous lighthouse on the way up Rt 1 is very nice. Camden Harbor is a smaller but less crowded than Bar Harbor but just as nice.
We have a place on Moosehead Lake, and make the trip from CT many times a year. We often stop to spend a night with friends in Rockland and Friendship, so know Rt. 1 well. All I can add is that you might be 71 when you get home.
Too many eating places to mention (any disreputable-looking place on the water will be great and offer photo ops) but don’t miss Red’s in Wiscasset for a lobster roll. Get a guide book for locations of lighthouses. I like a whale watch ride out of Portland for a great view of the Portland Head LH and lots of other photo ops (seals, etc. and maybe even whales). Acadia is massively crowded in the summer and we have seldom gone there - if you must mingle with the tourists, use the free (if I remember correctly) bus. We like Owl’s Head, Rockland, Rockport, Camden and Belfast along the coast and will be in Camden for two weeks this summer. With LH’s, it’s hard to avoid postcard shots - I have lots of them. Try for unusual angles and vantage points. Ditto for boats docked or at anchor. Finally, lots of great street scenes in the towns mentioned above.
Don't miss Portland Head Light.

and then get a sunrise club card down in town, did it years ago, no real favorite motels but favorite restaurants, the list starts with "The Thirsty Whale"

Ha ha. It looks like someone could spend a whole year just visiting every little place.
