Unexpectedly WE are going to have a day when we will be in the area of Letchworth State Park, wondering about photo ops with auto access or just light hiking, not going to be able to take long jaunts from the car that day, Thanks in advance, Bob.

Bob there are parking areas along the gorge where you can park, leave your car, walk a few feet and snap away. Be sure to get a picture of the Mount Morris dam. It is huge and was built to control flooding downstream in Rochester, N.Y. I live about 30 miles from Letchworth. There are three sets of falls and the new railroad bridge over the gorge up at Portageville. There are some real photo ops at the park. It is known as the Grand Canyon of the east.

Thanks, I've been looking on line but the sites wern't telling me how close I could drive, I doubt my wife is up to a long hike and definately not going to be patient sitting alone in the car while I go walk-a-bout. Thanks.
BTW next stop on that trip will be Niagara, another place I haven't been yet, and a my age too.

Also visit Letchworths house, which is now a Inn and Resturant. It's T the first falls and is another great photo op.

Very easy walking on beautifully built stone pathways. There are a few places where stairs will take you to a viewpoint. There is also a beautiful horseshoe bend in the river that photographs well. The Middle Falls is the classic shot and is near the Glen Iris Inn, a great place for lunch. Have a great time.

You mention you will be going to Niagara. I'm assuming you mean Niagara Falls? The city on the American side is pretty shabby. Definitely take a walk to the Canadian side. It's worth the walk over the bridge.

Our Darling Daughter is planning that part of the trip, knowing her tastes I'm not worried, but thank you for the thought, I believe she has a co-worker from the Canadian side that is giving her pointers, and as with most daughters she doesn't listen to Dear Old Dad much.
BTW she really is a darling.

If you plan to go to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls be sure to take your passport with you. It is required. Also take the Maid of the Mist boat ride, it is fantastic.

Bob, Letchworth offers enough photo ops to fill several 8gb memory cards. If you can get there at sunrise, Big Bend area is the best spot. If not, it is still a great location. The upper and middle falls are great locations. Also, Wolf creek is a wonderful opportunity for photos. As previously mentioned Glen Iris Inn is a great place to eat. Also, there are many picnic areas along the road, most with great views. If you are up to a balloon ride, that will provide you with beautiful aerial photos. Letchworth is filled with hiking trials. One roughly follows the river through the whole park.
One piece of advice, if you are driving in the early morning or around dusk, keep your eyes open for deer. They can dart out in front of you unexpectedly and close to you.
Bob, if you do a search for Letchworth photographers,, you will find a couple that live in the area and photograph extensively in the park.
Also, If you are over 60 and visit the park during the week, there is no entrance fee. Looking forward to seeing some of your pics. Message me if you have any other questions. Oh, and 1 more thing, there are many other spots that offer drinks and a limited menu.

Hi there Bob,
I went to college in the area in the late 60’s and “discovered” Letchworth. I went back several years ago with camera in hand. Everyone is indeed correct...ample opportunities for great photo ops without a lot of walking around. There is one location close to parking area with a short series of steps which allows you to Look down the gorge and see two of the cascading falls; railroad bridge over the gorge should not be missed. Highly recommend a polarizer to enhance your captures. Fabulous falls right near the Inn. Have a great time.

If you go for a second trip be sure to tour Watkins Glen. It is a mile and a half long and has 19 waterfalls. Be prepared for all the stairs though.

I agree that the Canadian side is much nicer. And, I also thank is the bettor photo vantage point without long walking and semi acrobatics on thw US Side. The sheer scale and power of the falls is compelling.

I remember Letchworth from trips a s a boy.
