These images were made during a visit to the Dolly Sods Wilderness area of West Virginia and the nearby Canaan Valley. At the time I was with a small group of photographers guided by a young Vietnamese-American who was starting his adventures as a photography guide.
I have never seen more spectacular sunrises like those I saw here. The mountains surrounding this area begin at elevations over 2000 feet. We were cautioned of the rough terrain and dangerous cliffs and we all took extra caution since it was dark when we got there to photograph. Nonetheless it is a beautiful area and a paradise for nature photography.
All images using my Nikon D7000. I used the 24-70 f2.8 (borrowed from the guide) and my 28-105 f3.5-4.5 D lens from the 80's. Support for the camera came in the form of a Gitzo carbon fiber tripod with a RRS ballhead that also belonged to the guide. Conversions were made using Affinity Photo. Before you ask, the guide had two Gitzo carbon fiber tripods and prior to my trip I asked him if I could use one of them to save me from carrying one of my tripods.
This took place during the early fall but because of the height it was freezing cold a small price to pay when we all were rewarded with beautiful images of that place.

Excellent pictures. How lucky were you that the guide had the equipment you needed?
It's a wonderful mood you captured from these images....excellent work.
I liked the last one best. The clouds in the valleys looked like water.
Very, very nice work. It would be difficult to pick a favorite.
These are very good. A couple are WOW. Thanks for showing them!

Very good shots. Am wondering what the DSLR color ones would be like
Heretic!!!!
Color would simply confuse the tonal and compositional quality of these images. They are at the peak of perfection for the subject matter.
Thank you gentlemen for your kind comments.
"Very good shots. Am wondering what the DSLR color ones would be like" They are very good, no pun intended. I keep colors as natural as I can with my cameras and I seldom will enhance colors although I know there are occasions when a light lift does miracles to enhance the colors.
The Dolly Sods is such a beautiful area that is its difficult to get a bad shot.
Awesome images. I especially enjoyed the "misty mood" in the first two.
Outstanding images, some of the best B&W I have ever seen.
Spectacular B/W, love the contrast on all these photos and thank you for posting them.
