Upcoming trip to N. Wisconsin & Michigan U.P.
I hope you are not going to early. My wife went up to Door County several years ago over Columbus Day weekend, expecting to see the fall colors. Well we got to see some snow but the foliage still hadn't turned. You might want to check with some of the Chambers of Commerce before you head out. I would recommend Sister Bay, they seem to have their act together.
At the bottom of the UP (I think you actually have to take the Mackinac Bridge down to the top of the Lower Peninsula) catch the ferry to Mackinac Island, a do-not-miss place to visit.

Wisconsin is nowhere close to Sault Ste. Marie.

Seems to me that you have plenty of things to do already. Lots of driving. Plenty of Waterfalls. Years ago the wife And I spent a week just going to different falls in the U.P. We found a nice book just on all the falls up there.. Enjoy you should have fun.

Newport State Park is Wisconsin's first Dark Sky designated park. I have seen the Aurora Borealis up there in Fall, it will depend on Sun activity during your tour.
Thank you so much. Maybe I'll get lucky.
