Great photo! Interesting story about Neuschwanstein that actually involves a camera -- when I was stationed in Augsburg, Germany, I took the obligatory tour of the castle. As Longarm knows, it is quite a hike from the parking lot to the castle entrance. About half way up the hill, there is an imbiss stand (bratwurst, pretzels, drinks, etc.) I stopped at the stand and then took a leisurely walk up to the castle. As soon as I reached the castle, I reached for my camera only to realize that I had left it sitting on the imbiss stand counter! I don't know how many records I broke running back down the hill! I was shocked to find it sitting exactly where I left it. And THAT is the difference in being in Germany and some of the other countries where I was stationed....

I spent 10 and a half years (three tours) stationed in Germany with the US Army ... I have pictures of the castle in all seasons - even did the walk in the snow one time, of course, I was about 40 years younger then ... in my time (left in 1984) there was not a problem taking pictures inside ... we, the family and I, enjoyed our time there and hope to go back for a visit sometime ...

Oh, how I miss being able to live in Germany!!
Was stationed in Frankfurt, in the Mannheim/Heidelberg area,
and my last two years prior to retirement, was stationed in Munich,
an area of the country where many spent a decent amount to visit.
I understand that about 99% of the US military bases are not in
existence any more - only maybe an air base for planes to hop in
and out of.

One of the most well rewarded walks I have ever taken. I lived in Munich in 61, and as a child, it took my breath away. I still think its the most elegant castle of them all.

The carriage ride is a less taxing ascent to the Schloss, although pedestrians often overtake the progress of the horses. If the carriage is crowded, the driver may invite someone to sit beside him immediately behind the horses, explaining you are in the "freckle" seat.

So many people go through this castle that they have to keep each group moving. No photos means you won't slow things down by taking pictures, but keeping you moving means you can't even stop to soak in the view of each room. I found it very unpleasant to be herded like that.

I was born in Germany many years ago. I am always amazed at the marveling over the Neuschwanstein castle. The most beautiful castle of Germany IMHO is the Hohen Zoller castle in Hechingen Southern Germany. If you ever have the chance, go and see it.

I am really sorry to hear that you can no longer photograph inside. I was stationed in Germany during the Korean [and cold war] era and managed to visit and photograph the interiors. Very Wagnerish, Lohengrin (sp?) murals and furnishings. I have loaned my archive slides to Drexel University for their selection of images to digitize. If/and/when I get them back, I will try to remember to find these and will put them up here for possible interest.
