My learning curve sometimes doesn't match the learning curve of a software. Plus as a beginner, Im not familiar with some terminology. Before I purchase On1, I downloaded the trial version and watch some how to videos. I liked what others were saying about it and customer service. Between the PDF Perfect instructions, the videos and my " see what this does" experiments, I think I hit a gold mine. I tried other cheaper stuff but they were always limited on what they could and couldn't do. It's like this as anything else, the more you use it the better at it you get. = practice.practice practice.

If I were just starting out learning processing, I would use a free or inexpensive program. I would never pay $120 a year for LR and PS. Upgrades are another concern. They seem to come out about once a year, and they're usually not free. Of course, with the Adobe package, the updates/upgrades come along when they're ready at no additional charge

Has anyone had any experience with using ON1 as a Raw processor as a substitute for Lightroom. I understand that ON1 will be upgraded in June os this year and I an curious to know if it is simpler to learn than Lightroom. Lightroom is OK but the learning curve is much harder for a first time user and I am thinking that ON1 will be much easier with the same features. P3

I have used On1 ever since LR & PS went on the cloud. On1 offers much more than LR and most of what PS has, layers are easier to use. the learning curve is about the same as LR and easier than PS. and it does so much more. Updates are free and there are many videos to help you out. Every month they send how-to videos. The update in June will include LUTs and more. Go to their website and view all the features and learn how to use them. If you buy the program set up your workflow the way that you would like it. Also make sure that your graphic card supports open GL a must for on1 to work.

On1 is a dynamic photo software. However, I still use Lightroom for my file management and On1 for my photo development and special effects with its myriad of filters.ON1 revised software 2018.5 will be out in June and if you have ON1 Plus the upgrade is free.

Remember LR is also a digital image manger. Something that LR does not do.

Without knowing your skill level already its hard to say whether On1 Raw 2018 will have a learning curve for you. If you have been using LightRoom the features for raw development are about the same in On1 Raw 2018 with a few nomenclature differences. But when you start using effects it has so much stuff in it. But if you are just doing simple post processing I feel you can learn any package pretty quickly. I would rate Luminar as the easiest to use with On1 Raw 2018 next then LightRoom and finally PhotoShop. I really feel that having to use both LightRoom and PhotoShop to do many things is a real advantage to On1 Raw 2018 over them. While it doesn’t have every thing it has about 90% and for me is more intuitive.

I want to say something about all the discussions around LightRoom being a DAM (Digital Account Manager) vs On1 Raw 2018 being a browser. I found using the LightRoom catalogs to be one of the worst features because I don’t know how many times I opened it and it said it had no idea where my images were. Catalogs (databases) get corrupted easily (and I am a expert on DB since I been selling them to the largest companies in the world for over 30 years). I really like the browser approach for On1 Raw 2018. You put your images in a folder controlled by your computer OS not On1 Raw 2018. All changes are stored in that folder with nothing being done to the original image with small sidecar files created by On1 Raw 2018 for the changes you have made. With the release in 2018 they supported versions. In my mind this is a much easier and safer method than a database. And it is a hell of lot faster than LightRoom. I'm using a 2011 iMac running High Sierra off an SSD drive and 48 gb of RAM. On1 Raw 2018 is so much faster than any other app I own which includes LightRoom, Topaz, Nik, Photos, PhotoShop Elements and Luminar. And I've never gotten a message saying it can't find the image.

Just so the wrong impression is not left with the OP, within a year's version, On1 updates are free. However, if I want to update to On1 2018 from the 2017 version I own, the lowest price I have seen is $79, certainly NOT free.
