No reason to regret buying the 850--it is what you wanted, enjoy it.
Just enjoy its full potential with FX lenses in FX mode.

Kind of an off-the-wall question: If you use an FX lens on a crop-sensor camera, the "effect" will be a focal length increase of 1.5x as compared to its use on a FF. If he uses his 28-300mm on the D850 in DX mode, will he get results like he used a 450mm?

Of course. But he's also throwing away the outer portion of the image to do it.

The angle of view will be like that of a 450mm lens on an FX format camera when its zoomed out to 300mm and shot in DX mode but there is no increase in magnification or anything else. The same result can be had by cropping the FX image in post.

It's 19.4MP in DX crop mode. You could use it in the non crop mode and likely the long end is OK. The short end would have vignetting but you can crop later and may have a larger area than the DX crop mode.

Common sense would tell me that Nikon considers the DX mode to give the optimum quality for any particular DX lens on the FF sensor. Composing in crop mode would be more efficient, especially for telephoto shots.

I use an 810, I have tried DX lenses, but why have a very expensive camera and put crap lenses on it. One of the decisions to buy this camera should include the purchase of the quality lenses it needs to perform up to it's ratings. DX lenses are for DX cameras.

After much hesitation about the price I finally plunked down the money for a new Nikon D850 body. So far I am very happy with it, but I am a long way from exploring all of its features. I have a question that some of you might have faced: I still have some of my favorite DX lenses ( e.g. a Tamron 18 -400 mm zoom, which is very compact and light and pulls in distant objects similar to a much bigger FX zoom would). The D850 can be used in DX mode, but naturally one loses some of the megapixels by cropping the sensor. Does anybody know the size of the remaining sensor in terms of Mp-s? I don't think its the same as a 24 MP DX camera would have

The D850 is a great investment! Even though you will not be taking advantage of its full potential with DX lenses, you will still get good results. Not everyone can afford to plunk down the money for both the camera and lenses at the same time! Enjoy your camera now with what you have, but start planning for future purchases of FX lenses! Yes, they tend to be bigger, heavier, and more expensive than DX lenses, but it is worth it when you see the results.

Why not rent an Fx lens for the trip? Seems a shame to have a Mazeratti for a camera with a Smart Car lens, IMO. Have a super trip!

Some of the FX lenses cost as much as the camera body did. I can't shell out that much money all at once, even if the purists disagree I will use the lenses I do have. Didn't somebody once say: The best camera (and lens) is the one that you have with you. On that basis I will keep using my remaining DX lenses until I can afford the full frame ones everybody seems to cherish so much. By the way, my Tamron 18 - 400 mm lens takes pretty awesome closeups.

Totally understand the position and point of view! Can't afford to do everything at once at these prices.

I think your evaluation that DX lens are "crap" is a bit of a reach.

A DX lens on a FX camera is really no different than an image cropped in post processing to give you the same angle of view.

Yes and no. Same view. Not the same number of pixels, since the pixel density is lower on the FX sensors. I don't think it's going to matter much with a D850. With a D810, the cropped image will give you around 16 megapixels. With the D750, 10.7 megapixels. The DX cameras have between 20 and 24 megapixels. I think that the difference is significant when you're comparing to the D750, either in the DX mode or a full frame picture cropped in the same way.

I don't want to get into the "how many pixels do you really need" discussion again.

If it were me in your situation, I would take the 24-120 f4 or the 28-300 and nothing else. Then concentrate on what the D850 and that lens can do and forget about "pulling" distant stuff in. The alps are beautiful, the river is beautiful and you will come home with wonderful photos. The places you are going are not a paradise for wildlife like Alaska and you won't miss much.

I have the 24-120. It's a decent lens and probably all you need. I don't own the 28-300, but it's a love it or hate it lens. You get opposite opinions on the forum about it.

The D850 is going to be unforgiving of an inferior lens. Shoot some pictures with both lenses before you leave to see which one seems better to you. Take that one. Keep in mind that you do have the ability to crop heavily with this camera, which can somewhat offset any reach issues. It isn't the best way to do it, but taking a big, heavy longer lens on an overseas pleasure trip may not be convenient either.

How did you calculate the MP in DX crop mode?
