It is this kind of informative, factual post that makes UHH such a valuable resource.

Well done, Jerry!

Thank you!

What system are you using? My computer uses windows 10 and the free software for photo editing that comes with it is all I use. If you shoot raw then it's another matter.

I think my son used Pain, and I can't believe what he's able to do with it. He's always making all sorts of composite images, combining details from different pictures or pictures he find online.

Why would anyone name a photo editing program "Pain"?

Oh wait. Maybe you meant Paint ???

I regularly use gimp, which is available for all versions of Win, Mac, and Unix. I don't believe that some call it "hard to use".

I used GIMP for several years. I wouldn't exactly call it hard to use, but there is definitely a learning curve. Most photo editors don't deal with masks and layers, but there's real power in those tools. Some practice is needed to use those tools.

Maybe "hard to use" was a bad choice of words. "Has a long learning curve" might have been better. I have been using it for many years and am still learning new ways to use it. I only recommend it to someone who is willing to invest the time to learn it. Similar to PS/LR once the basics are mastered, the difficulty fades. BTW I love the new 2.10 version.

As already mentioned, Photoshop Express is your best bet. Easy to learn/use and will do all your basic edits... and it's free.

My former laptop had some program built in that enabled me to lighten up too-dark shots and to crop without using Paint. This one either doesn't have such or has it so well hidden that I can't find it.
I have about 400 photos from my daughter's wedding and I'd like to try 'fixing' some, but I do not want to purchase any software.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Microsoft Office Picture Manager, part of the Office group, it's a quick and handy program to edit jpegs. Any job I've worked it's been on the system.

The Microsoft Office Picture Manager is not present in Office 2013 and later. If you have your heart set on using this obsolete program and don't have it available to you, check out the following link. It is bundled with SharePoint Designer 2010. This explains how you install only the Picture Manager and not everything else. This is free, by the way. I've used this little editor quite a bit in the past. The only annoying thing is that it insists on displaying vertical shots horizontally. If you rotate them and save them, everyone else sees them horizontally.

The Microsoft Office Picture Manager is not presen... (show quote)

I use Office Picture Manager on my work computer for speed and simplicity. I need to document building conditions and work completion and often (purposely or inadvertently) leave my camera set to save both JPEG and NEF/RAW. This software allows me to apply quick corrections for brightness, contrast, white balance, etc. and reduce the size to email/monitor resolution. It's quick, easy, and avoids issues when I fail to switch my camera back and forth between RAW and small JPEG (more than my senior citizen brain can remember at times).

But on the good side, I haven't started driving in the right lane with my turn signal on for extended periods of time.

I too like Irfanview for easy editing. Used it for many years. No issues!

I love Topaz Studio. The included free adjustments are very good and very easy to use. You have the option of purchasing additional more sophisticated adjustments as well. The presets that have been created by the community are also free and are “one click” adjustments.

Let me know when you start giving away all of your money. If you remember, of course.

Wish I’d thought of that before I gave it all away to my kids and grands!😎
