Panasonic LX10 or ZS100 on sale at B&H.
I know you said no DSLR, but the Nikon D3300 is on sale on Amazon for $400 with the new afp lens. That is a super lightweight option as well.
I recently got the ZS100 and like it very much. It has more than a 4 times larger sensor than the 1/2.3 size in most common P&S cameras (116mm vs 28mm) AND it has a viewfinder which is invaluable outdoors in bright sunlight.

We're doing a lot of touring now that I'm retired. I don't like lugging around my 35mm slr but my iPhone 6 doesn't produce the results I'd like. What do you guys recommend as a decent quality Point & Shoot camera for less than $500 or $600 max?
Thanks
Sony RX10 version I or II used....

Hey folks.... The man said he doesn't want to lug around his SLR (film?). Anybody reading and understanding his post would realize that all the entry level DSLR's many of you have thrown at him would NOT meet his requirements. So why are you wasting your time and his time with camera's that have nothing to do with his request for info?
Even the Nikon P900 is very likely larger than his SLR. It's a "big" bridge camera. I couldn't believe how large it is when I picked it up at Best Buy.
The man wants a high end P&S that out shoots an Apple Iphone.
Scratch off a good third of the responses he received.
Good Luck Original Poster!! And perhaps you should give us the size of the pocket you want to haul your new camera around in. That may get you many better answers.
I have a little OLD Fujifilm 5Mp E550 that still outshoots all the camera phones and I've replaced it with the same make and model three times.... the last time for $35 slightly used. AND it has an optical viewfinder. I bought the 8mp E900 model once and it was not as good as the E550, so went back. 5x zoom.

And...I'm still trying to find the (mutual) definition of "Point & Shoot" that we're using on this thread.
I would probably look into a variety of bridge cameras (they look like a dslr but only have one lens that goes from wide angle to zoom). My brother and sister both use Canon bridge cameras and they produce great results. I have a Fujifilm Finepix S8650, which is now out of production. I brought it with me on a day trip to San Francisco, when visiting family in CA. I didn't want to lug around my multiple DSLRs with multiple lenses on them. That little camera (which cost $116 at the time) turned out great 11x14 prints. I photographed Alcatraz from the marina, using the super telephoto mode, and you can see the people walking around on "The Rock." It took a number of tries to get that photo because of camera shake on my part. I was able to photograph the Golden Gate Bridge (from a number of places and the photos all enlarged to 11x14 without a problem).
Can't really recommend anything meaningful to you unless I know what you want to shoot and/or the 35mm equivalent zoom length you want.
B&H has the FZ1000 for under $600.00
As TheShoe said above, the FZ1000 is a very good camera. It can cover a wide range of shooting options. Without more info from you it would be a great generic pick. I like mine a lot.
Do you need to change the lens? That would influence any suggestion I'd put forth.

For work, my daughter gets a new cellphone every couple years. She says the new Samsung S9 cellphone has the best photo quality of any kind so far.

That's true for many. It does retouching automatically. People who take pictures of themselves like cameras like that.

In referencing your post, she works for an ad agency and takes photos of many things at many times of the day/evening. It's not just the shot of herself.
