I guess I should have put this here, rather than in the General section.

We're off to a good start, and I'm glad you gave us an example of what HDR can do for B&W images. I think if we spread the word about this forum, we'll have a lot of fun, and learn a lot.

Never thought of using B&W for it. I like the result. Were they shot B&W or color then converted?

Great shot Jerry. You really captured the wintery mood.

It was night so there was no color.
:D

I just accepted the Photomatix B&W version of the final result.

There is always color. The street lights would have been giving off a certain color, and the light from the sky.

Right. That's why I added the :D

Without color, color-blind people would just be blind.

I personally prefer to take a color HDR image and convert to B&W in Nik's Selver Efex Pro. I haven't had much luck with the B&W presets in Photomatix or Nik's Silver Efex Pro. Here is one I did of Boothbay Harbor, Maine back in the beginning of June.

Very nice. So you use Silver Effects Pro, but not the presets? I've never used any Nik products.

Thank you. I do use Silver Efex Pro and use the presets there with minor adjustments as I see fit. I do not use the B&W Presets in either Photomatix or HDR Pro because I don't like the end result; images are usually too noisy for my taste and even though I can reduce the noise in PP I find that converting a HDR image to B&W lends better results than converting to a B&W HDR image.

WOW I didn't think about doing the B&W either. I like the crispness B&W renders. Nice job. Have to give that a try too.

Personally I love B&W HDR or not. There are times where certain colors distract rather than add to an image. I think back to Look magazine and some of their photos from sporting events or political conventions they would have been uninteresting in color but had great depth of field in B&W.

Right! I always thought it was interesting that B&W photos (and movies) are held in such high regard, since they are not at all realistic. Suppose color film was the first to arrive on the scene. How would late-comer B&W be viewed (no pun intended) then?

Good Lord Jerry I didn't think of that aspect but probably should have. One of my young granddaughters once told me she was really glad the world was now in color and that it must have been sorta ugly when everything was B&W.
