My wife and I are going on an Alaskan cruise in August. I've spent the morning looking at Mike's (Blacks2) vast array of Alaskan photos and it occurs to me that I can't rely on memory anymore to keep track of what I'm photographing. I don't want to lug around a notebook, or even an iPad. But it occurs to me that there must be an app for my iPhone that would do the trick.
Does anyone use a journal or logger and if so, which one is your favorite. I've looked in the App Store and was overwhelmed by the choices. It occurs to me that something that uses gps and allows voice notes as well as auto sequencing of the photo number should be available.
I just found a thread on UHH that talks about Nikon specific devices, so I'm editing this thread to note that I will be using a Canon 80D and will not have web access for about 10 days.

I generally have a GPS unit attached to my camera so I know where any given photo was taken from.
I also use cameras that have a voice recorder built in so I can just press a button and give a short blurb describing the current photo. It comes out as a wav file with the same name as the photo last taken.
Occasional photos of signs. Digital photos are basically free so the photos of signs can help pinpoint where you are (and sometimes give some details). On shipboard where there aren't any road signs you might just scribble a note on a post-it and take a picture of it.
I love the Evernote app. I can use it on my phone to take notes and I can take a photo with my phone camera and include it with the note. I set up folders to categorize my notes.
I have a Pentax K-3 II and its built-in GPS works great for me. I keep it on and when I get home I download the KML file which stores Latitude, Longitude, Altitude, Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), Direction. Import it into Google maps and viola! It gives me a complete mapping of my travels and a dot where I took every pic! The K-1 and K-1 ii both have the built in GPS also. I know that Nikon and Canon also have optional GPS geotagging attachments.
I have a simple way to remember my cruise pictures - for the last eight cruises, I copy the description of the shore excursion into my Outlook file. At the end of the day, I download my pics to files based on the location where I shot. I can always go back to the shore excursion itinerary and look at the date stamp of my pic to know where I was and what picture I took. I also tend to remember each picture.

That brings up another question. I will have my iPhone in Airplane Mode while I'm out of the lower 48 so as not to incur expensive roaming charges. Will the GPS receiver work in airplane mode?
If you have AT&T or Verizon, you can use your phone up here as there are no roaming charges. Both companies have cellular service in Alaska.

I use a memo pad, 2 5/16 x 4 5/16". Much smaller and lighter than a dumb phone.
Well, a picture is worth a thousand words. So don’t worry so much.
Date_Subject and make one image of a sign or something with the name of the person, place or, thing.
