Ok, Robeng. "Ahem....Your portraits are widely admired by other photographers as having a special quality. Some (I) would say that by so doing they seem to give greater depth to the message....an additional layer beyond what many other photos of similar subject matter posess) Do you agree and if so, do you think or do something to gain this effect?"
***Hands the mic over to Robeng.***

Hi dat2a,

Its funny that you bring this up because I just spent the weekend at Fotoclave 2017, the largest photography conference in Northern California. Some of the speakers were George Lepp, Gary Crabbe, Brenda Tharp & Seth Resnick. During Seth Resnick lecture he asked the question what is "Vision and Style". Many of the participants tried to answer that question. Me to myself.

I will try and explain this to the best of my abilities. Style for me is the way I do things, the way I perceive the outcome of the image. It's the way I want to tell the story with a picture my way. To do this, I look at the person I plan to photograph and look for their strong point and weaknesses. What would it take to make them look good.

My vision is to create images that stand out and provoke emotions where the viewer initial response is "That's an awesome image."

So far, I believe I'm doing okay with my Vision & Style, but I learn this weekend if I want to be better, I have to be more creative and get out of my comfort zone. As far as this forum, I have 3 female photoshoots coming up so I will be experimenting with new concept and ideas.

I wonder how many Hoggers were at this conference.

Rob

Excuse me??? Who do you think I am bashing? Did you read beyond my first line?

What I hope to accomplish is starting a discussion of the characteristics and qualities of good nude photography, as somewhat distinct from the characteristics of good general photography. Critique, positive and negative (if done politely), is part of the learning process. We study the masters to improve ourselves.

ROFL!!!
I got you- thought it was funny. The art of ironic satire and your obvious appreciation of his talents are not lost on those of us who have a brain, it is an intellectual excercise... not to worry- value those whose opinions you value.

"Thanks for your thoughts, Rob. I know a lot of people 'just shoot' in the interest of 'being spontaneous', but clearly your exquisite photos take cosiderable thought, planning, experience, and of course, inspiration. From all of us here in Hog-land, thanks for your perspective, and we look forward to seeing more of your exciting images."

I am late to this thread due to being a new member but between what JohnFrim covered in his opening topic - for those who actually read it - and Rob directly-from-the-source comments, I consider him a benchmark that many, myself included, will not reach. I was amazed he has only been shooting 7 years - would have assumed multiple time that many years by the results of his excellent examples. Salute!

I've seen enough of Rob Eng's photos...

... no, I'm not saying 'stop'!!! ...

... to know that they stand out distinctively from many of the other offerings in this section. That's not to discredit everyone else, because there are many other photographers who are showing us excellent work. But I feel there is something special that just oozes "Rob" when I see his photos. I almost feel I could pick out his images in a lineup.

So, I am wondering if others have that same sense. And if you do, what characteristics you would ascribe to Rob's photos that would make them identifiable in a random collection? I ask this in the hopes that by analyzing his images we can identify the characteristics that make for good nude photography, and that others could then pay more attention to when doing a shoot. Clearly there are the 'standard' aspects of good photography such as exposure, lighting, setting, rule of thirds, etc would apply. But what makes Rob's work really stand out?

To start this discussion, here are a few of my thoughts.

First, I think he gets/chooses amazingly beautiful women. They have exquisite feminine features, smooth skin, great physique, etc. Second, I think he has great settings/backgrounds (cracked wall, concrete wall, bed, etc). Third, I think his models are all VERY comfortable doing the posing, and it shows in their expressions. Fourth, there is a purpose in the pose. I can't always describe it myself, but there is some message being conveyed in the image. It might be pensiveness, it might be a tease, it might be an implied invitation, it might be naughtiness, it might be serenity, etc. But his images are never just a snapshot of a naked woman.

Help me out with your thoughts.
I've seen enough of Rob Eng's photos... br br ...... (show quote)
It sounds to me you are jealous of Rob Eng.

Of course!!! I admire his work but am envious of his oppprtunities. I don’t have the courage nor the confidence to do what he does. So I will just be satisfied to observe... and salivate.

Sarcastic humor mocks or ridicules, usually by saying the opposite of what is actually meant.

We all got it right off... Olivia is simply a world class subject, a Stradivarius... so you sort of start on third base, your talent scores a home run.

(no double-enténdre at all intended with the analogy)

I despise derogitiveness. On any subject. But on this one I stand corrected. It was the way this started out.

That's ironic coming from someone who is the poster- child for anti-Trump "derogitiveness" (is that even a word?) in The Attic.
