This is a small monument that sits on the site of what used to be a local coal mine. The wheel is a smaller version of a coal-shaft winding wheel and the other is a cart used to transport the coal underground. I have tried to create a dark nostalgic look evocative of the hardship of coal-mining and of days gone by. Feel free to add your opinions.

My favourite too. I took the above shot on dslr but had my film body too, that was loaded with Ilford fp4plus B/W film, i shot the whole roll of 36 and was very excited of possible results until i discovered that the film hadnt wound on !!! I dare not shoot the same roll but i got another roll to try.

Very well done.
One who has never been into the underground world of mines can not truly get the knowledge of how - not bad - but terrible the working conditions were. Working there never got better over the years only safer to the point of being in the top 5 of deadliest occupations.

So true Harvey. I am 50 yr old and started my mining job at the age of 16. It was very short lived as i had the foresight of the dangers of mining and as a result i got a transfer to the lamp room where i would charge all the batteries for the miners lamps, even the Davey lamps too as they were still used in 1978. I must admit though, there has never been a closer and tighter knit community than that of the folk that went so deep underground never knowing if they would make it back to the pit surface. It was damn good wages though !!

I shutter to think of the times my father came home to tell us of one or more of the men we knew who were not going home that day. As well as so many of my school mates who have died or been disabled down there. My father told both my brother & I he would hit us in the head with a shovel if we ever went to work in the mines - we both chose the grocery stores over the mines & hit with a shovel.
It is such a joke to see these movies of mine shots - semi dark - the darkest of dark is in there - as you know if your light went out you sit down as the next step may be 1,000 ft down.

So sorry to hear that, I couldn't tell you how many times that happened to me. Very disappointing.
