Check out this link and go to the classified for sale section. Mostly Canon gear and I think more reliable than buying via e-bay.

I had the 24-70 f2.8 L IS USM before switching to Olympus micro 4/3 systems. It was a great, versatile lens.

Good luck with the 'hunt' for a lens.

Consider a used 24-70 f/2.8L, I have a Mark I without IS that used to be my nearly-everything lens.

70mm on full frame is a little wide for portraiture, traditionally speaking portraits are best between 85 and 135, but what's a little rule breaking now and then. Look up some comparisons of the same portrait shot at different focal lengths. Look at how different the face looks at say 50mm vs. 200mm. You might or might not like the results. For me, 70mm was about the limit before I started to not like face proportions. YMMV.

The 2 Canon lenses I use the most is the 24-70 f2.8 (all around) and my favorite is the 70-200 f4 for outdoor. Both are awesome lenses and cover 85% of what I shoot.

[quote=Opusx300]Just purchased canon 5d iv. I have no lenses yet and a $1500 budget for lenses. i shoot mostly portrait and landscape.

I am doing full frame on a budget. So I went looking for one lens to add to my recently purchased 5D MK II and 50 f1.8.

With help from members here and a lot of research I ended up buying a Tokina AT-X 24-70mm f/2.8 PRO FX. B&H had it on sale at $619 instead of $950 new. What I gathered was that it is highly rated. Some say better than the first version canon 24-70 F2.8 but not quite as good as the version II. Let me tell you This lens is wicked good. The sharpness is incredible if you do your part While not a problem for me, I had no idea how big a 24-70 F2.8 lens is until I got it in the mail. It dwarfs the canon 24-105 in size and weight
Again this was not a problem for me. Additional this Tokina is built like a tank. Read the reviews online

Hello, I've been away for 3 weeks or so on a trip to Europe. First off, it is not necessary to buy "new" lenses for your Mark IV at this time. The suggestion for the 24-105 is sound advice for a all round walk-about lens. Also, consider other brands, like Tamron, and Sigma. I personally would look for a used Tamron 24-70mm, and a used Canon 70-200mm f2.8L Mark II. Look for these lenses at Adorama, B&H, and don't forget KEH, they specialize in used equipment, and give a 6 month warranty.

It is a shame but I don't think he is listening, it is the L factor, too many people think that if it is an L it has to be great, reviews on the original 24-105L are pretty underwhelming on sites that actually test the optical quality of the lenses, the MKII hardly fairs any better, I have owned 3 different 24-105L lenses and none of them come close to the quality of the Tamron 24-70... I also have the 70-200 mkII it was a pretty tough choice for me between that lens and the Tamron 70-200 G2, but the build quality of the Canon was the deciding factor for me.

The Tokina is an excellent lens, the Tamron has comparable quality, they both score 32 on DXOMark, the Tokina slightly edges out the Tamron on sharpness on the 5DSR 25mp/24mp, the Canon Mark II is better than either DXO score of 35 with 32mp sharpness. The Canon 24-105L IS has a DXO score of 24 with 18mp sharpness on the 5DSR. Tokina lenses are built like tanks, I have the 16-28 for night skies and it is a beast.

Landscape = Sigma 24-35mm f2 - sharpness and versatility in range.

Opusx300, what a great opportunity you have. a great high end full frame camera and what a consider a wallet full enough to do some serious damage with glass. For me the secret is knowing what candidates I want to consider. If i had your situation I would consider Refurbished Canon and used. I am a mid 70's senior with controlled budget.

My story I bought a Canon Refurbished 6D. I had a 85 f/1.8 & 50 f/1.8 as only EF lenses. looked until I could buy the l24-105 f/4 (before the vs2 came out). I thought at the price I paid I could pick up a 24-70, but I love this lens.

I am an UWA shooter and had the 10-22 EFs, great glass. I was lost at UWA. Blurryeyed turned me on the Tokina 16-28 f/2.8. I picked one up used. I also budget picked the Korean fixed 14 f/2.8, another great glass.

sevgeral years later put myself in you shoes I would look for the 24-105 v2 or the 24-70f/4. Smart shopping I may be able to add the L 16-28 f/4. I am a wide shooter.

There is so much great used high end gear available, Refurbished and Third party, it amazes me. I have a Canon base with, Sigma, Tamron and Canon.

I just added Sony APS-C for portability. Some health issues have limited me but I just got word the flowes are starting the bloom on the hill and I am ready for a field trip.

Great shooting and shopping.

I have both the Tokina 16-28, and the Canon 16-35 f/4L IS it is a really hard call as to which is better, but I think that the Canon wins this match for landscape for a number of reasons including the use of 77mm filters, the IS also makes it really good in low light, Tokina is would be my choice for night shooting however. I also have the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 very sharp lens, sharper than the other 2 but manual focus that takes some getting used, I think that the newer ones have focus confirm, unfortunately the older ones do not.

You'll love the 5D4 (unless you are into 4k video!).

Given your budget I would get the 24-70 f/2.8, and the 50 f/1.8. That should meet your needs until you save up for the 70-200 f/2.8.

Enjoy the new camera.

For my first Canon lens with a "new" (used) 5D Mk ii, I got a used f/2.8 24-70mm. I wanted zoom range (wide to moderate telephoto), and low-light ability. Later on, got a more telephoto zoom. But the first lens was very versatile and serves the need very well. Good luck with your decision. JimR

Agree on the Canon 24-105 it's just and the IS failed on it a long time ago. I hardly ever take it out anymore. The Canon 24-70 f2.8L and my 70-200 f2.8L IS II are far superior to that lens.
