Sometime yesterday, April 30th, the Windows 10 April 2018 Update became available to the masses. Microsoft will (sort of) start taking over all the Windows 10 computers in the world and push through the update. I read that the automatic push will start in the second week of May and take a few weeks.

Undoubtedly there will be questions like, "Will the new Windows version ruin my Adobe applications?". Or, "After the Microsoft update, my post processing software freezes."

I didn't want to deal with Microsoft commandeering my cellphone internet connection on an upcoming roadtrip so I forced the download manually while I had a Comcast connection. (It is said that "the pioneers are the ones with the arrows in their backs"!)

The good news is that none of my installed software seems to be complaining at all. Everything is working the same as before the update. And, the cherished and guarded space on my SSD C:/ drive was not impacted.

The bad news isn't that bad. The whole process took about an hour but there was only about 10 minutes where I couldn't use my computer. Once the long download is complete you get choices of do it now, remind me later and schedule a time.

After my success, my DW had the same experience with here machine.

If you want to do it on your terms and timing, it is Windows > Settings > Update and Security.

I guess I was lucky. I apparently was one of the first people that Microsoft pushed it out to. I upgraded my machine around 8 p.m. last night after first backing everything up. It took at least 30 minutes, but everything is working just fine.

Question on the update - did it set all the settings back to MS's defaults? I spent a couple of hours making sure I had all the settings (notifications, sharing, etc...) set to my preferences - don't want to have to go through that again.
Thanks,

Thanks,

While I don't know exactly what you might have changed, I configure my interface a lot and none of it was changed back to the default.

I had disabled the Windows update on Win 10 64 bit pro. Somehow an automatic update started when I turned of my PC about a week ago. When the system came back on my Canoscan 8000F 4800 dpi document and film scanner driver stopped working. I use that scanner for 120 film slides and negs which many new scanners don't support. Canon didn't update their driver for Win 10. It took me half a day to figure out that their Win8.1 driver could be installed and worked in Win 10. I promptly disabled the Microsoft updating feature again. For a while I thought I needed to buy a new scanner. To me, microsoft updates are more trouble than viruses.

No operating system by any computer manufacturer will support older software or hardware forever, its just not realistic to expect them to do so. Perhaps you should consider acquiring a second computer running and older operating system which will support that scanner.

I upgraded my Windows 10 April update as soon as it became available. That is a total of 5 computers, everything from a ten year old laptop to a current very fast, very big state of the art computer (my work computer). The only thing of significance was the loss of "homegroup" which was expected. The biggest upside was a glitch in my two fastest computers was eliminated. When the computer was rebooted or turned off and then on, it would lose its internet connection and would need a network reset and, sometimes a repair of the homegroup.
If someone has further problems with the upgrade, please reply and we will try to help

If you share files / printers via a HomeGroup, you'll be disappointed to learn MS has removed homegroups from the 'home' version of Win10. You can still share files and devices, but the process is different and some things may need to be re-installed. A 'feature' I didn't note until my desktop finished rebooting and the notification messages started.

That issue is caused by the maker of your printer, not Microsoft. it's THEIR JOB to make THEIR products work with updates to the operating system. They have access to the changes that an update will make BEFORE that update is ever released to the public. If they are too lazy or too cheap to update their drivers, that is NOT Microsoft's fault.

I personally think that people who think that Microsoft is responsible for making their hardware work with new updates should not be allowed the use of anything more technological than a pen and paper.
