At this time I've been working with The Canon SX 40 HS. What would be a 'step up' in AF cameras? I stll love this camera but thinking about the future. Whatever photography you can think of, I do. Don't worry about the cost: I want quality. All the UHH people have great experience and I want to capitalize on it. Thanks.

I just ordered the new Canon Rebel 4Ti. It has all the latest Bells & Whistles and does not cost a fortune. The money you save, you can buy quality lenses.
Then when you want to trade bodies in the future, you won't loose much.
Thank you, Sir. I appreciate your answer and time. Have a good week-end. Joe

You're at the top of the "bridge" type cameras so dSLR or mirrorless models are the next step. Mirrorless bodies many times don't have a viewfinder so that's not acceptable to me personally.
A really good entry-level dSLR with a nice long zoom would be logical and last you a long time. Maybe a Nikon D7000 or a Sony Alpha 77, for example. You're looking at about $1800 with a nice zoom but you wouldn't regret it.
Great! Thanks for your info. As good as this Canon is, I figured I was at the top of the line. Have a good week-end. Joe
I would look at the Pentax K5 one of highest rated camers out there and reasonable price + can use every pentax lens ever made
A step up may be the Canon G1X. It's not a zoomer - 17-112mm in the old money - and not a strong macro performer, but image quality is excellent: sharp as and the bigger sensor handles higher ISO very well, much better than a small sensor P&S. I've had mine for a few months and it's with me all the time. I'm leaving the DSLR home next holiday and just taking the G1X. The reviews are all pretty right in pointing out the compromises Canon has made with this camera, but they all agree that it produces DSLR quality pix.
Of course, if you want more range, a DSLR like the 40D, 50D, 60D and 7D with a big zoom is probably your next step. Just read a post on UHH where a whole Canon kit was exchanged for a Sony A57kit. Careful how you start a kit coz it's expensive to change brands.
And I thank you, too. Every morsel of info can lead to an educated buyer. Joe
